There was just some discussion on this a few threads back. Consensus here is that it doesn't matter. Note that even on the diagram it says "Hose orientation at heater core optional".
The manual shows the heater hoses crossing (so intake fitting hose to "fender side" of heater core and water pump hose to "engine side" of heater core fitting. Same for 5.8L as shown.
