Heater hose order?

93 aero 3.0l no auxiliary heater

Which heater hose goes to which fitting(top or bottom) on the heater core? I just replaced it but I didn't check beforehand and I cant find out what it's supposed to be.

There's one that attaches to the water pump, and one that goes to the thermstat housing. Is there any kind of structure inside the heater core that would make it easier to flow one way?

p.s. Anyone know which way the water flows through the water pump? In through the lower rad hose and out through the heater hose or is it the other way around?

I don't think it matters much which port on the heater core you use as inlet vs outlet. On some cars, the hose from the pump has a flow restricter in it to reduce the shock of the water pulse going to the core. This is the only thing you need to keep in the right hose, but again, which port on the core that goes to does not really matter. Similarly, some heaters have a valve that shuts off water flow, and again, you need that on the hose coming from the water pump.

Actually, it does matter, if you hook up the hoses wrong, air will get trapped inside, hindering cooling efficiency. I am sure the inlet is the bottom, and the outlet is the top. I have not replaced the heater core, so don't quote me on that.

That makes sense...but by "cooling efficiency", do you mean "heating efficiency"? That's the main purpose of the heater core, as it does very little to cool the engine.

It just occurs to me that maybe I hooked up mine incorrectly, as I always hear air bubbles gurgling through it. It seems to provide plenty of heat though. I'll have to check, and now it's an easy enough fix.

Most heater cores have both inlet and outlet in the same spot.

A "Old School" trick to flush and get the heater core working again is to switch the hoses to reverse the flow to break the crud loose.

Ford is also good for making the inlet and outlet hose different sizes just to pi$$ you off and have to but 2 separate hoses instead of one long piece.

I haven't looked real close at my Aero, but I will try to get a few pix's and post them on my Webshots to help you out.

Hope they help ya.
My finger is on the "top" hose which goes into the bottom of the heater core.

So it appears the bottom Hose on the water pump is the thermostat bypass? Judging by the photos...

I replaced my water pump on my 91 lariat and am trying to figure which hose goes to which tube...
