Motor Markings

I've been looking for a block for big red
I found on but had some questions for you guys

he says its a 390 but instead of 352 stamped on the block it has a mirror image of 105 stamped in its spot

has anyone heard of this variant if so what information do you have

105 is a foundry (casting) mark only (circa 1972/73), does not define the engine size.

So, it could be a 360 or 390, but to verify...measure the stroke (bore is the same 4.05").

Stroke: 360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3.78."

On sale day, 360's magically become 390's!

That they do!

Some(most?) but not all mirror 105 blocks have extra webbing around the mains and some have thick walls allowing as much as an .080 overbore in rare cases, with ..040-060 over being more common. Sonic check and mag of course to see what it really is.

ya I'm having the machinist check everything just didn't know if it was a "different or special" block cause that's what the guy is saying

so sleepy your saying it is a little stronger?

If it has these extra webbings like the CJ blocks then yes it's stronger.


Standard block on left, extra webbing on right

Wall thickness isn't so much about strength as it is longevity. If it could safely go 60 over then you could get 2-3 rebuilds out that block.

lol I'm not having the best of luck on blocks
first large crack in the side losing compression - trash
second cylindrical crack in cylinder one through to the water jacket - trash

hoping this third is a good one!

the guy says the block is still standard bore so I got some meat to work with
he also said he pulled it himself and that was cause it had 200,000 miles and was losing compression
so I'm optimistic but have hopes in reserve

Hopefully this one works out for you! Just make sure YOU check to see if has the extra webbing, and get a copy of the sonic sheet. No offense to your mech but I've learned the hard way to take no one's word on what's what without proof, especially if he's trying to up the $ because it's supposed to be such and such. Best of luck
