Block Markings

I was looking at some FE motors today and saw one that had the markings the same as the ones on my 428. Its the numbers beside the water pump one motor had 352 on it and the others had 201 on it. Whats the difference. And im trying to get a 390 but he doesnt know whats what so is there a way to tell the difference between FE motors wthout taking them apart. Thanks Jerry

The 360 and 390 share the same bore, 4.05". The 201 is actually an mirror image "105", which is a later casting.

As Bear said, 360 and 390 have the same bore. You can check the stroke easily be removing a spark plug, and inserting a small diameter dowel in the cylinder. Turn the engine by hand, and mark the dowel at the top of the stroke, and then again at the bottom. 360's will have 3.5" between the marks, and 390's will have 3.78" or appx 3 3/4".

The reverse image block has more webbing in the crank area and considered by many to be better. Whether in street use it actually is could be another debate.
