Rolling coal tips needed

I've got a 1989 Ford F250 XLT Lariat, with a non turbo, 7.3 IDI; I was just wondering how do I roll coal. And does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

Welcome to FTE.

If it doesn't pour out the smoke when you floor it under load, then you'll have to fiddle with the injection system to make it smoke.

Consult with OP here as to how it's done:

I believe the traditional method is to find a deposit and buy a pick axe, a hard hat and minors hat. Something like this...

Then you get yourself a little box car on wheels with some track and you're ready to "roll coal"!.....

Well, I suppose you could just wrap the air filter with a plastic bag, stuff a rag in the turbo, or pinch the exhaust almost shut. That'd give you the full coal rolling with all associated damage to the engine, and public harassment for doing it in the first place.

X2 on bigger injectors. Everything is bolt on with the 7.3 idi

No turbo's on idi's from '92 and earlier, unless one is placed aftermarket.

To the OP, sorry bud, but for many of hear this isnt a very popular topic. But check out the link that was previously referenced.

While I like a little puff on those old mechanical pumps. I wouldn't think about ever rolling coal. But get enough air in there and u actually have some power! A big bad diesel can be smoke free. If u think u might be down on power I would do a simple air filter check of even a upgrade and adjust the pump ACCORDINGLY. I don't know much an all about idi but egts kill Diesels

Rolling coal on purpose is a great way to get the currently "exempt" diesels required to pass emissions tests.

If you insist on needing to roll coal however, be a team player and please only roll coal out in the country where the EPA won't catch wind.
