I just bought a 55 f600 thats very close to original. This is my second project truck, my first was a 55 chevy 1/2 ton. This new truck has some paperwork saying it is a 57, but the cab is 53-55. I probably wont be able to register it because of the messed up papers but thats not really a concern.
Its pretty rust free, I want to move the rear axle forward to either shortbed or longbed length so I have the option of mounting and old bed from a f100-f300 and then cut off the excess frame. I'll also remove a few leafs to drop it a little and make it softer.
Does anyone know if this body style did get used for the larger trucks in 1957?
Welcome to FTE!
Nice looking truck. Yep it's a 55 for sure. It looks like it has the 239 Y-block in it. Unless it is a larger Lincoln Y. (High fan mount water pump indicates a 239)
Originally Sea Sprite Green. That the color of mine. Good to see that.
So if you aren't concerned about registration, what are your plans? I was going to say it may not take much to get it straightened out, but you live in California so I'm sure it will be a mess.
i did a little more searching and found that the 53-55 cab that I have was used until 57 in the big trucks but not in the US. So it looks like I can throw all of that paperwork in the glovebox and forget about ever registering it.
How about the engine, does anyone know what it is? I'm guessing its a Lincoln y-block???
Harrier, Thanks for the info! I don't know anything about this truck and have never looked at Ford's before, much less about Heavy Duty trucks from the 50's. But it was cheap and I just wanted a cheap truck to mess around with. The vin plate it came with was F6z5r___ or something like that, but since that's screwed into the glove box I can probably ignore that too.
I'll look at 239 y-blocks too, nice to know the fan mount is something I should be looking at to help ID this engine.
Looks like a 239 Ford Y block to me. Beware of the wheels, they look like "widowmakers".
Welcome to the forum.
Yes they are. Before getting real busy on it I'd suggest a Google search to study up on "Firestone RH-5°" rims. Also called "widow maker" two piece rims. Add my welcome. Stu
I learned from my 55 chevy to take my time. theres a lot i wish i had done differently. I am aware of the widowmakers and dont plan on touching them myself or replacing them. hopefully I can find someone to fix the one flat tire that it has.

Does anyone think that could be a 256 y-block?
4th digit of the VIN is the engine code: V = 239; Z = 256.
279/317 Lincoln derived Y blocks not available in 1953/55 F100/600's.
The vin plate that is screwed into the glove box is f60z5r so it should be a 256 if that vin actually belongs to this truck. I'll have to go look at the casting numbers sometime. But is there a way to visually identify just from the pics I posted?
Are these engines worth anything? Did a 256 come in the f100s or 200s?
I have no proof to back up the statement I heard, but I've been told before on the larger trucks they often used an old body that was left over. Someone tried to sell me a '56 F600... that had a 55 body on it. It was legally a '56.
You may want to look for the VIN# on the frame to see if it matches the one in cab. On my 55' 350 it is located on the right side, top of the frame, near the inner fender, starter area. Looks like about were the cross member that holds the rear engine mounts on my truck. If those match I don't see any reason you couldn't get a title somehow! You would have to check with your State, as every State has their own rules though. Good luck with your Truck.

No one in their right mind will work on those wheels.
Of course, you are near or in Fresno....
There are a bunch of threads on replacing them. Since you are 5 lug it's going to be a challenge.
Don't even try to air that tire up unless you have it in a cage.
