I've never had a problem arriving at a "fair" number for a new vehicle. Generally speaking for me the number is the same regardless of dealership. That said, you will come across some dealers who are better at finding all rebates and other incentives (your incentives and their incentives) that others will miss for one reason or another.
For me the deal or the lack of a deal all comes down to the TRADE.
Because it's not a simple answer. Even just the $1200 destination difference is 3% on a truck. So if you tell him to be happy with 11% and it could have been 13% because of how his local dealer shows destination well, you're not exactly helping the fellow out. Rebates differ, markets differ, doc fees differ, aftermarket care differs. There are many other factors too, so it's not a black and white answer as you're trying to make it be. Certainly not when asking the internet for advice.
What expenses are there are on an ordered truck? Well you still have to wash it and most places balance out expenses with a "pack" so that all units are charged the same. Deeper, you have the opportunity loss of not selling the one in stock. If I could have sold you the one in stock but told you to order instead, well the continuing expenses with the other unit keep building up. Business aint cheap. Interest alone on the $45k truck runs about $75.00 a month, so while the ordered truck might not have a cost in interest, not selling the in stock one adds to the business monthly expense.
You want my "forum" price? It's based on a 17050 zip code and includes destination as well as $1250 in general rebates and $500 in owner loyalty.
$40827 is splitting holdback. If you came in off the street it's be $669 higher (back to invoice). That's for if it were in stock or an order so long as the price levels are the same (prices go up through the year). Actually I already gave the means for you to attain this figure in this thread, but that's it spelled out. That's about 11% under invoice. If you found a dealer with high doc fees, hidden destination charges, or simply qualified for more rebates, you could both artificially and in reality see a better savings. Likewise, if you agreed to 11% off because it's what I told you and you didn't realize they had a $600 doc fee and added $1200 destination fee well then you just took a deal that you could have done better on and that's why I don't like giving hard answers without a significant amount of background information as we hopefully have here for the OP.
I'm not a pricing service. My goal is to help folks realize that casting out a net for numbers isn't an efficient way to understand their market and the deals they can get.
Thanks for all the info. I guess I kinda need a New England specific forum for a closer price comparison lol
Nothing carries between states. Customers haven't realized how different it is between Fords rebate differences and various state marketing and fee laws. That's why it's so very dangerous to ask a simple reasonable question.
So I spent about 1 hour at the dealer. Gave them my truck build off the Ford website. The came back after the rebates at 9% off. So not unhappy with that. However I confirmed with him the the tranny recall. All his 250's are grounded (no diesels on the lot) so no test drive. I crawled around a 350 but he claimed the ride is very different than the 250 so I opted to not test drive the 350.
He was also under the impression that any order placed now would not be effected as they have already made the correction at the factory. Not sure if that is accurate or not.
So I'm debating on going with vinyl seats or maybe no carpet to squeeze the price closer to my goal. I didn't hate the Vinyl on the 350 I looked at... but I wonder how it would be after a long ride in the heat? Any thoughts?
Ford Accessories has a decent CarHart brand seat cover that would do the job. Alternatively you could do a Katzkins type product for under $1500 and get leather or breathable sued. I would test drive the 350, if you like it, who really cares if the F250 is smoother. If you don't like it, well then, wait for a 250 to get fixed. I don't feel too much of a difference myself when I just hop in one.

I wanted a vinyl floor but for a little more $$ you get the XLT options which include fog lights, privacy glass, and a few other really nice options and the carpet. So, I ended up with carpet that I cover with mats. While the cab is very quiet regardless, the carpet will lessen road noise.
Finally secured the deal I was hoping for on a XLT F250. I'm ordering so I got everything I wanted (except adaptive steering which is no longer offered on the XLT). It built out at $48500 and they are doing it for $42000. So I'm happy enough with that price. Had to shop a bunch of different dealers to get that price though.
Going in Monday to sign the paperwork and put a deposit down.
Boom! 13.4% off MSRP. Nicely done. I'd happily shop a couple of dealers to get to that price, some dealers like to think they are the only game in town. That's literally thousands of dollars difference from Truecar pricing.

That has to be dealer discount plus rebates and maybe a trade? what are the breakdowns if I may as.
USAA has 1.99% for 72 months with no early pay off fee. That's who I'm financing with. Now I just need the dealer to give me a good price.
That's a very good financing offer. I recommend that you make sure you include all of the elements of "price", as this will effect the amount financed. For example, are there any dealer doc fees or other fees?
Using rounded numbers, here's where we ended up with our recent truck purchase:
MSRP reference, including shipping: $50K
Price: $47K (invoice incl tank of gas)
Trade: ($5K)
Taxable price: $42K
Tax (3%): $1260
Tag xfer: $80
Rebates: ($2,250)
Out-the-door: $41K
That was it. Our down payment and loan amounts were based on the $41K figure.

No trade. As far as how the dealer got to the price I was given.... I don't care. I don't ask about rebates or incentives or doc fees etc. I just tell them the price I'm looking to pay. How they get to it is of no consequence to me.
I actually had a second dealer email me the next day offering the same ordered truck for $41828....

Back mid-March, in Ohio, I ordered a F350 DRW 6.7 PS SuperCab XLT. With all the options I wanted, MSRP was $62,960. Invoice was $59,235 including the $1,295 destination and a full tank of diesel. Paying $56,887 including a $1,500 rebate so about 10% off invoice. No trade. Was about $900 below X-plan before rebate. Perhaps I could have done a little better had I shopped around more, but don't have the time and like this dealership. As long as I am happy with the deal, that's all that matters.
Still waiting on my 17 CCSB SRW Platinum 6.7L F350, should be here in about 3 weeks. Paid 57K US after rebates etc. (plus tax) through Ford financing of 0.99% for 72 months. Sounds like some better deals up here in Canada?

For sure on the financing, 4.9 for 60 months from Ford here. Your rate beats even the credit unions here.
