What should I see?

This weekend I installed a set of gauges on Big Stinky this weekend. It's the set of four of the glowing ones. I installed the EGT sensor in the exhaust manifold. I see the fuel pressure at about 58 psi and steady. What should the trans temperature be just at freeway speed unloaded on flat ground? I have seen the exhaust temps from 400 to 600, so nothing. I just did a 15 mile run on the freeway.

EGTs don't really build unless you pull a load or do a WOT "test". Trans temp is ideal at 160 degrees (from what I've heard), I ride 140 empty on the flat in the winter, and I've seen as high as 190 while mountain climbing in 110-degree heat (empty).

Towing is a whole 'nother thing.

Towing mine usually runs 80-90* over ambient.

Typically trans temp is something over ambient and I'm thinking that 90 degrees is the number but I'm not sure.

Thanks guys, I think the trany was about 170 with an ambient of about 75F.
I assume that there is no thermostat in a trany right?

Not on a stock one anyway. Derail (sp?) makes one, works well for me. I installed the larger of the two available.

What engine/trans do you have in your truck? If you have a 7.3, have you upgraded to the 6.0 trans cooler yet? I'm surprised that no one mentioned this yet. There is a big difference in trans temps between a 7.3L cooler and a 6.0L cooler.

Your temps sound about right if you have a 7.3L with the stock cooler though. Just for reference, I usually see around 150-170 when towing with the 6.0 cooler. I think they're closer to 130 or so when empty.

Rule of thumb with EGTs is when empty, they should be about 10 times whatever speed you're going. So if you're going 60, you should see 600* on flat ground in OD. However, confirmation of this alone doesn't mean that you have a healthy engine without any leaks. My around-temp EGTs were fine, but when I went to hook up the trailer, I couldn't pass 40MPH on the freeway in 2nd gear because my up-pipes were leaking. So you really need to put a load on it and see how it performs there to get a meaningful result.

I had to install the thermostat wit the 6.0 cooler as I live in the colder part of Ca. Trans would barely get over 90 - 100 in winter. Bad JuJu.

Yep it is a 7.3 with the stock cooler to date. The cooler is most likely the next upgrade.
Here is another question, I have seen an external trany filter on some pics here. Do you know the PN of the filter?

Andy, you're so used to the Ex forum where guys forget to post what they have, that you didn't realize you were reading in the 7.3L forum.

Busted. I totally thought I was in the Excursion forum.

There's no part number because it's not a Ford part. However, there are different ways to go about accomplishing this. The simplest is to just plumb in a simple in-line filter like this:
Amazon Amazon

A much better system is the screw-on type filter mounted somewhere. This is the route I plan on taking.

I bought:

-
Amazon Amazon

-
Amazon Amazon

-
Amazon Amazon
(x2)

The filter head comes with a port drilled and tapped into it for an external gauge. I really didn't look forward to the task of trying to figure out what size it was and then locate a plug for it because I wasn't planning on running a gauge. Instead, I found that the plug I had just removed from the fuel filter rail on the cylinder head to install the FRx was a perfect fit so I just used one of those.

Throw in some 1/2" oil-rated line, mount the filter head on the frame rail forward of the front axle, and that should do it.

Of course, now that I'm thinking about doing a manual conversion, I might not need any of it...

Your just adding more restriction, nothing beats routine maintenance on a tranny and a big transmission cooler IMO.

The small one is what I had been seeing. As for the large screw on one, it might have too much back pressure (10 micron). If you want to use that type of filter, they are commonly used in marine applications for fuel filters. I have two boats and both have that type of filter. Take a look in the marine section of BPS, or Wally world. You might save some money.

130 degrees with EGT's at 500 degrees. *Boost at 6 and fuel pressure steady at 62 psi.

* A boost gauge that reads a max of 35 is preferred due to it's ability to deliver more accurate boost readings.

This, I started out with a 0-100 boost gauge and thought I had issues as it wouldn't come to life till I got north of 5psi. Changed out to a 0-35 and things now work as they should!
