I recently bought a 93 F350,7.5,4wd,ZF5, 60,000 miles. This is the first truck I have had with this trans. The clutch almost feels like it is not disengaging completely, unless I am really careful about depressing it fully. If I don't , and if I don't shift slowly, sometimes I feel a slight gear roll.(no grinding at all) Can happen in any gear. It has an external slave, which is moving 7/16" when depressed.Manual says that's correct.Tried new ATF, then tried royal purple. No real difference Do these things just shift like this? The last Ford I had was an 86 F250,351,4wd,4 sp.(not sure what one) Seemed to shift easier.
When you are at a dead stop how far do you have to let the clutch pedal up before the truck starts to move?
How much free play do you have? The free play is the amount you can push the pedal down before it pushes somewhat harder, at which point the throwout bearing starts pushing on the pressure plate.
So if I am on an incline ,not running,in gear, and I start pushing the clutch pedal down, it goes down about 2/3 to 3/4 travel before I start to roll. Letting it out running at a dead stop, it starts to move about 1/4 to 1/3 travel while coming up.
Letting it out running at a dead stop, it starts to move about 1/4 to 1/3 travel while coming up.
That doesn't seem too bad. But if have more than say a half inch of free play and you can get less that would help with the shifting. But you must have some free play or you will wear the throwout bearing out and the clutch will slip also wearing it out.
I think these are supposed to be self-adjusting so there may not be an adjustment. I'm not familiar with the external slave cylinders on these.
Also make sure you have enough brake fluid in the clutch master cylinder.
Think I might have found my shifting issue. Loose clutch master cylinder bushing. Guess its a common problem. This looks like a nice fix. Where can one get that Heim joint?Anyone had this problem?
