must I visit before I can find a dealer with F450s (with a long bed) on the lot?
Today in Montgomery Al. (our state capital) I found exactly one dually F350, and absolutely nothing bigger for me to lust after. Even the Ford site where you build your own - then allow them to find it provide results like Casper the ghost (invisible).
Not a tremendous problem as I have a champagne taste on a beer budget, but I can/do dream. Whats a sincere looker supposed to do?
When I was shopping for mine I found Autotrader.com was effective at pulling up new inventory that even my dealer couldn't find on the ford system. Very effective, lots of search filters.
I know, it is frustrating. My local dealer refuses to have any longbed SRW trucks or any dually trucks as dealer stock. Right now they have maybe 5 F350/250 SRW short bed trucks and they'll sit there for a few months before they get sold.
I'd bet you could find what you're looking for in GA though. Several large dealer networks.
Try Akins Ford in Winder, GA. They have thousands of vehicles on the lot, with most being trucks. Was by there yesterday and have numerous '17s including a huge black F450 Platinum on the front row.

As y'all broke the interstate I can't get to Winder from Bama.
I looked it up and it's quite close to my daughter so next time I'm there I may visit.
Why not order what you want. Go see Bryan Taylor at Collier Ford in Wetumpka. I have used him for my 2015 F350 and 2016 Fusion. He will give you a price that is very similar to X plan pricing. Also, request brochure from Ford as they sometimes give you a certificate in them for some Customer Cash you can use.
Not that it will do any good, but you can tell him Larry Holman of Tallassee send you. lol
I guess I wasn't clear, I'm not looking to purchase, I'm looking with desire (maybe it's lust).
My question was how can they sell them if they don't show them? Expecting customers to drive hundreds of miles to see one doesn't help the average Joe.
Actually driving something results in many sales, to date I've never test drove a catalog vehicle.
I don't disagree with you on that very valid point.
Problem is that not every dealer wants a truck that they don't sell a lot of sitting on the lot. It costs them money... I want to look at other vehicles for the family and the dealers around here just don't have the inventory but of course they will all order me one...
I understand that the dealers inventory must flow (my father owned a dealership).
What I envision would call for the Corp. office to place them geographically around for folks to see/drive; maybe every 100 miles or so. At the end of the model year wholesale it, raffle it off, whatever; that'd be cheaper (and likely sell more) than a superbowl advertisement.
Makes sense, but there has to be a reason why they don't do that... And Ford has been in business for a very long time and has not needed a government bail out.
I admit that I get annoyed when I can't find a place by me that has a vehicle I want to look at in stock.
I got a chuckle out of the every 100 mile comment, as we don't even have ANY car dealers every 100 miles up in AK... Heck, we don't even have gas stations every 100 miles. (Not meant to offend you)
My local dealer has one that just came in. At $85,000 MSRP, I don't suspect that they are going to sell this quickly and easily. Owners of the best towing beast on the planet tend to what exactly what they want and don't mind ordering and waiting.
DAK: That's OK, we have no Snow Machines in AL. (Not meant to offend you).
m-c-t: $85K, Yikes!
What I can find locally are the bigger trucks - those generally intended for OTR (both new and used), which can be modified for RV's (my intended use - and why I'm interested).
Something like this (where they cut off the rear-most axle for RV use), After & Before:
