hey all,
my 2014 f250 4x4 crew cab with 6.2l gasser only gets about 7.5-8 mpg at 65 mph while pulling my 27' bumper pull travel trailer. I know that thing is basically a wall trapping the air but is there anything I can do to gain a couple mpg more? I can average about 15 mpg at 65 mph without the trailer on the highway. Any thoughts other than getting a diesel? Thanks all
A diesel is a wash when you consider the fuel is slightly higher and the initial investment cost. You might get 10-12 mpg keeping it at 65. Reducing speed can do wonders when towing a big "wall". Towing my 5th wheel with my 7.3L I would get 8 mpg at 65 and 12 mpg at 72-75 mph.
The biggest thing to help mileage is to stay out of the throttle. Holding a gear and losing a couple mph up a hill usesvless fuel than downshifting and turning 4000 rpm to maintain speed. In stop and go driving go easy on the pedal. Trying to keep up with traffic while accelerating will drink the gas. Increase following distance while on the freeway. Braking because of slowing traffic in front of you just means you have to accelerate and use more fuel to get back up to speed.
7-8 mpg is about what 6.2 owners are reporting while towing. I get right at 8.5 "featherfooting" it in Northeast Tennessee with our fifth wheel. That is running in 5th most of the time and 4th some of the time. I only see 6th on downhills.

Thanks for the replies, glad to know it's not just me. What's your all thoughts on a tuner for fuel economy? I don't care about more HP really, but wondering if I could squeeze 2-3 MPG extra out of it? Thoughts? If so, brand? Issues?

Pulling my 41 foot Raptor with the 6.2 gasser SRW, I got about 8.5 MPG @ 55-57 MPH, using the "M" and manually shifting the gears.......pulling with the 6.7 PSD, I get about 9.5 MPG @65-67 MPH, put her in "D", set the cruise and relax (unless in heavy traffic)!!!!!! Don't buy a diesel for the very slight gain in fuel mileage, you will be disappointed!!! Buy a diesel because you *WANT* a diesel, you will NOT be disappointed!!!!🤠🤠

I don't think there is a chance a tuner will give you that kind of a bump.
How many miles are you driving to get your average, what kind of road conditions, are you figuring both directions.
When we left last fall for the winter heading to Yuma the first day we averaged 6.5 but that was in a heavy wind, without resetting by the time we arrived in Yuma it was close to 9. I always figure mine over a long trip not short trips.
No way your going to see that kind of mpg bump from a tuner, even empty. My guess would be no gain towing. You will notice great throttle response.
I'm assuming you have 3.73's and 18 or 20" wheels. Do as raindessert said and find you some take off 17" wheels with 245/70r17. I pulled our 30" travel trailer with a Golf cart in the bed. Scaled 8500lbs and averaged 9.8 mpg over the course of 1600 miles with that set up at 65mph in a ccsb 4x4.
I'm with everyone else, no tuner will give you any towing mpgs. I had a 5star on my last 6.2, I got no mpg gain during any driving situation. Gears are reported to do as much as 10% during towing situations which is no where near 2-3 mpgs. It would be nice to know what gears are in your truck and the tires/size you are running.
if you adust afr to get economy...you have no power...and losts of heat
if you adjust afr to get power...you have no fuel economy...and a cooler running engine
I did a 3 month trip last year from west coast to east coast and back again. About 12,000 miles and average mileage 11.2 for the entire trip. I have a 34 ' 13,000 5th wheel. My truck has 3.31 gears and the 6.7 and 18 " wheels. truck is completely stock.
