Missing 7.3

Did my starter yesterday. Today now several times, truck ran rough and stalled. Turned over, tach not bumping, no codes. Would go after a couple tries. Stuffed a new CPS into it. Drive 30 miles, now has a noticable miss, no codes, no smoke and quit again, but started right up.

No codes. Does not feel like another truck and under valve cover gaskets, so any thoughts before I send it in to Mr. Goodwrench?

1999 7.3 Super duty!

Still could be CPS, is the one you replaced from Ford or International dealer only? My 97 had the original black CPS and it started cutting out on me. Replaced it with another I purchased from parts store a few years back and it ran like crap. Purchased another from International Dealer and all was back to normal. Correct one is dark gray in color with purple o-ring. Flaky CPS seldom throws a code.

Get yourself the Grey one from a dealer, they are only $30 of I remember correctly and most of us carry a spare in the truck anyway since they quit without notice.

Update 1999 POS 7.3 Stalling now to start

I can't find my previous thread. 7.3 started stalling. Would usually start back up. FIgured CPS, as tach does not move when turning. Got new CPS, and same problem. Would just sit and idle and stall every hour. Fuel system is fine, and none of the usual injector noise associated with fuel air/lack of fuel. Did it with a full tank too. Before it would quit, it would run noticably a bit rough. Unplugged ICP Sensor (On top of drivers side head), and no change. Unplugged fuel heater. Stalled 5 minutes after that.

Took to my buddy's garage, it threw several codes including AIH. Was sitting in my driveway idling, I tapped the PCM with my foot, and it quit. Started it up, tapped again, it quit. I figured my 15 year old DP Chip was mabey flakey, so I pulled the PCM and removed the chip. Had been running the last month just fine.

Go to start it up and nothing. Turns over, WTS light on, and no codes from PCM, so the PCM is not totally fried. Grabbed a blue FORD CPS, and stabbed it in (Aftermarket one was black), still no start. Hear fuel pump going, but no white smoke.

Out of ideas. Re installed PCM twice, pretty hard to mess that up, no bent pins, wiring harness is fine, and I live on Vancouver Island, not a rusty place.

At least it is a total no start so if I have to hire a wrench it will be easier to find, but not looking forward to it.

Based on what I have said above, any ideas? No codes, once again, and for fun I cleared the codes using Toque Pro and my WIFI OBDII adapter.

Thanks in advance FTE, been my go to guys since 2005!

Are you using torque pro to check codes ? There are lots of codes T/P doesn't see , download Forscan check again . I use torque pro for the gauges , but Forscan is better code reader.

Yep I was. My buddy brought Autoenginuity over. DOes a buzz test fine, but the codes it gets are out of this world.

Head restraint failure
AIH Circuit Low
ICP Low

And a whole buch of obscure ones, nothing to do wtih anything on the engine.

Methinks I need to find some of the body grounds on this thing, but since it quit when I tapped the PCM, I may be looking for one of them to try. Back at it tomorrow AM with a complete list of codes, but it threw just about every code it had.

Have you checked the HPOP after it stalls to see if it is full of oil?

Yep. It would stall and start again like a bad CPS too so I dont think its HPOP related. Not getting any readimgs while cranking no IDM no RPM nothing.

Does the WTS light turn on when you turn the key or exhibit any odd behaviour?
