Hello Everyone! I was trying to do some research online about a truck I am possibly looking at buying and found my way to this forum. I thought since I was here, I might as well post and see what you guys think. This is what the owner has to say about the truck:
2001 7.3L Ford Power Stroke
-4 inch pro comp lift
-aftermarket exhaust and air intake
-Super chip and Edge chip
-all external aftermarket LED lights
-5th wheel ball
-tonneau cover
-front end rebuilt 50,000 miles ago
-new transmission 30,000 miles ago
-additional upgrades
Price negotiable...make an offer
It is listed at $14,000. Do you think that is a reasonable price, or what do you think would be?
You didn't state how many miles are on the truck, assume 200K+, being it has a ball in the bed I would assume a lot of trailer towing was going on with the truck and already having another 50k on the rebuilt front end and 30k on a rebuilt trans, I'd be leery myself. $14K is a lot of money for a 16yo truck, you're going to have 16 yo problems. KBB says for my area 60120 even in excellent condition the truck is only worth about $8800. Different parts of the country will dictate different prices, but $14K is alot for a 16yo old truck. https://www.kbb.com/ford/f250-super-...tion=excellent
The 7.3 trucks are getting way over book. Fewer and fewer available, and the demand isn't going away any time soon.
The gooseneck ball (or 5th wheel hitch plate) could indicate the truck was used to tow a lot. That would explain the transmission. Towing with "stacked chips" is hard on the driveline.
I'd want to know how many miles are on it. What transmission was installed? I would look for rust under the bed and cab. Not saying the truck isn't worth the asking price. But it'd have to be a great truck for me to give that kind of dough for it.
I paid 14k for my Excursion about a year and a half ago from the original owner. It was completely stock. Nothing had been rebuilt or touched on it as far I could ever tell.
Having that stuff fixed and rebuilt could be good or bad. Did they use OEM quality components? Did they pay to have the work done by someone competent? If they did the work themselves, are THEY competent?
I'd be leery of "aftermarket exhaust and intake" without any further information about what kind and how old. It could mean a drop-in K&N filter and a chrome tip.
You need a lot more information to pay that kind of coin. Used for towing isn't necessarily bad if they maintained it well. A well used diesel that has been worked hard and maintained well can actually be better than one that sat a lot and didn't get worked as much. Ask me how I know this. The 7.3 likes to work, not sit, so don't be afraid of it being used for towing, but run fast from poor maintenance.

My bad on forgetting to put mileage in the post. It has just over 150k. Thank you for all the info so far, I'll be sure to ask the seller about how much towing its been used to do, who installed what as far as everything that has been replaced.
Just to give another point of view.
My truck had a gooseneck ball installed when it was new also, the previous owner used to tow a horse trailer with it. I bought the truck with 53,000 miles and it hasn't been used since. I would for sure try to get as much history from the owner as possible, but having a gooseneck hitch doesn't have to necessarily mean the truck has been a tow mule its whole life. Not to mention, most of, if not all of them come with a box receiver. I would imagine that there some that never tow anything.
I agree that having the gooseneck installed gives more potential to tow heavy loads, but needs can change a lot in 16 years.
Spoke to the owner. His first thing he needed to let me know was that the truck had been rolled when he bought it. Has a clean title but was totaled. He said in 2007 is when he had an auto body shop do all of the work replacing the cab and front end. He said the truck was primarily a daily driver but was used to pull a camper on occasion. Transmission was built by Browns Auto which is pretty big around this area, has a 3 stage Billet clutch. Said he has roughly $30,000 into the truck since he bought it... I don't know what to think now.
Um, he rolled it and wants $14K?!!! Is he smoking the crack pipe? I don't give a sheeyit how much "work" has been done to it. I got a clean 99, no accidents, running really well, had some minor upgrades, and yes, more mileage....but for $5k less....RUN....don't walk, RUN....
New body work and the clearcoat is already gone? Body cancer? Salvaged title? My rig has over 325K and it looks better than that. It's an abused child and it will behave as such. Next candidate.
