Had my 3 speed trans worked on and got it back today. The shop said that it would take 20 miles or so for the trans oil to lubricate everything to where it shifts perfectly......does this sound right?
All around, Tom, it gets thick in the winter but 40 deg or so and above, you can't tell it from 90 wt. Nothing special needed for break-in, although a fluid change after ~ 500 miles would be a good idea.
I think that it's more like 20 miles or so for the syncros and other mating surfaces to get lapped in...the lubrication is there, now it's time for the burrs to get polished down.
I've started using Lucas engine and gear oils. So far I'm happy with them. Most gear oils available today in parts stores contain friction modifier for limited slip differentials. Since friction modifiers are designed to reduce friction between clutch mating surfaces, I don't know if that's good for a manual trans.
Ross - General year-round use or just for break-in?
I haven't put anything in the F3 trans yet, so my ears are open.
Clark - real sweet green truck you have there.
Tom
Thanks Tom! Your truck isn't looking too shabby either, nice Job! looks close to the original color of my truck...vermilion. 51/52 grill has always been my favorite of all old trucks
