I have a '84 f150 with a four speed "granny" gear(np435). the transmission locked up in 4th gear. i've taken the top part of transmission off and i can't see any that would seem to be the problem. if anyone could give me an idea what could be wrong i would greatly appreciate it. and does anyone know a company that sells good quality rebuilt or remanufactured trannys let me know. and how hard would it be to replace the np435 with say a T-18.
thanks.

Ir, I had the same thing happen on my 86' F-150 years ago. The trans was different, (3-speed w/OD). While driving down the road I noticed something kicking around in the trans. I felt the truck kinda lockup for a split second and then free up. I could hear something actually getting caught between the teeth of the gears. Little pieces of metal from the reverse gear were swirling around in the trans getting caught between the cogs. Needless to say, we replaced the trans. After we opened up the trans and saw what was happening, we noticed that there wasn't too much damage inside. Just about 5 small peices. I kinda felt that we originally could have flushed out the trans and then run it again. It would have been a gamble. There was no telling if we would get all of the pieces out without opening up the transmission. If you are going to go as far as opening up the trans, you might as well rebuild it or replace it. No telling how long the damaged trans would have lasted after we flushed it anyhow. We opted to go with a rebuilt from the dealer that we use. Good luck.
