Coil & Plug Question
What plug and coil issues are that?
The early modular motor issue with only 4 spark plug threads that contributed to the plug blow out issues were updated in mid year '03, so that '04 should be good to go with properly installed plugs, it has the seven thread design.
The COPs were the same for all years and there really isn't any problem with them at all, they typically last a very long time and only need to be replaced when proven to have failed.
I recently bought a 2001 Excursion V10 with a bad motor. Hole in block and heads were chewed up.
Prior to using the motor for a core I tested the spark plug issue.
I was able to put over 50 ft lbs of torque on the spark plugs before they stripped. And that was with anti-seize in threads.
Anti-seize says 16% torque reduction so approximately 58 ft lbs dry torque before thread strip.
In my opinion spark plug blow out is due to lack of proper maintenance and too low torque spec on plugs.
I torque all mine to 25 ft lbs with anti-seize.
COP are not the same for all years!!!!
OEM coils for 2000 have lips in the cop electrical connector. So OEM original coils on a 2000 will not connect to 2001 wiring harness. Goofy I know but new OEM coils for a 2000 will fit a 2001. Guess it was a issue only for the original coils that came with the vehicle.
