bad turbo?

hi guys i have a 97 F-350 4x4 crew cab 5 speed manual ZF5,just put the 3 inch downpipe on it and into 4 inch straightpipe,i cannot hear the turbo whistle and does not spool up,I have another 97 same pickup same setup only difference is it has the auto tranny, this one you can definitely hear the turbo. The 97 with the 5 speed i just put a used engine in it,could it be a bad turbo?vac leak?any ideas?

It does not spool at all you cant hear it ,even at an idle you can hear the turbo whistle on my 97 with the auto, the one with the 5 speed it just sounds like a diesel without a turbo.

Remove the intake tube and take a peak and see if the wheel is spinning.

Does the spider to turbo have the O ring? Does it have exhaust leaks on the up pipes? How's your fuel pressure?

i am pretty sure the O-ring is there, there could be an exhaust leak from the up-pipe when you first start it there is a little puff of smoke from around the turbo, up pipe area.Relearn me on checking fuel pressure, the schrader valve on the side of the fuel bowl?Whats acceptable fuel pressure if everything is good?

Get a stick gauge, one you don't care about and at idle check it. Be careful, diesel will fly all over.

Min 20PSI while cranking, 45min 75 Max at idle, and you will need an actual fuel pressure gauge to check under load should not sip below 45 PSI.

I have a '96 with auto tranny and I've never heard a turbo whistle, not once since new in 1996.

I eventually put a Tymar big air cleaner and a 3-inch round downpipe, no whistle.

I know it is operating normally because I have good power, and read up to about 20 pounds on the boost gauge. My fuel pressure is at a nominal 50 pounds even when towing under heavy load.

I think some turbos like to whistle, and others don't. I have never considered a whistle as a marker for good turbo operation.

Leaky up pipes, however, will effect turbo performance.

If its stock and your getting 20psi boost then you don't have leaks.
