Pretty weird looking custom camper...

Personally, I think this looks kind of ugly. But I will say it looks like it's been pretty well kept. The most concerning thing is the fact it's "motivated" by a 90-hp Pontiac engine. Seriously, who thought that'd be a good idea? I can't imagine this baby had enough grunt to get out of its own way. Head to the HP for more info.

it was common back in the 50's to replace the ford flathead with the gm overhead valve V8's. but the caddy engine was usually used.
that looks like a panel truck that had the body cut off behind the cab and a fiberglass travel trailer grafted on in its place.

Yeah, it's a wild one, for sure. Think you're right about the construction here.

An engine ripped from the heart of the smog motor nightmare era, driving the wrong wheels? That setup had a hard time doing modern freeway speeds with a small GM body wrapped around it, I can't imagine how it would do with that much weight and frontal area.

Probably not any worse than some of those campers I've seen based on small Toyota pickups.

Still I wonder why they picked the 'Iron Duke' engine. They could probably get more than 90 hp out of it, but still. Some sort of V6 would have probably been a better choice and still fit -- if they used rwd.

That Fordillac swap must have been quite a bear. I just looked up the 49 Cad 331. 133 HP, but it weighed 699 lbs. Little heftier than the flattie.

Even a more modern FWD setup, a turbo, something.
I once saw a late 70s FWD Cadillac with the rear half cut off, and a car hauler trailer grafted onto the back with dual axles. It was actually pretty neat, but was before cell phone cameras so I didn't get any pics of it.

Don't disagree -- I have one in an 84 Fiero. I just think that it's pretty underpowered for the camper

Wikipedia disagrees

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Duke_engine

They mention the 153 as a Chevy engine with a link to another wiki, but THEY say that the2.5 L is the Iron Duke.

Just passing it along,

jk

mehhh. the 153 4 cylinder was called the iron duke way before the poncho engine was.

most of the wikipedia "experts" were not even born when the info they verify as fact was made.

i wonder if the engine they are calling the iron duke is what we called the quad four back in the late 80's and 90's
