Farm tags...

Can anybody shed some light some light on the stipulations that go along with running a Farm Tag/agriculture tag in Alabama? I don't leave town often except for trips to Tennessee a few times a year which I usually take my F250 and don't want to catch any grief when I go... I know several folks that run them that aren't farmers and they don't even own land either.

Doesn't Alabama have a Department of Motor Vehicles who can explain it to you?

I'd check their official website, I'm sure it's all spelled out in triplicate.

Have you ever called the Tag office and tried to get questions answered from government employees who really aren't that knowledgeable of the regulations? and their only response is I can have someone call you back and nobody ever calls you back...

It was about as clear as mud on the travel part... I just don't want any headaches when I have to go to Tennessee.

Well you got a point there. That's why it's in your interest to get the straight scoop, in writing, in black letter law. You'll know more than they do in some instances.

I would personally just pay the extra 20 bucks. Not worth the fine if they decided to enforce it, because they didn't think you were using it for the farm.

Yeah that is where I'm at too... I don't feel like having a headache over someone else's interpretation of what I'm doing out of state...

Getting answers direct from the "horses mouth" would be best, if they could answer the questions! I know in KY, in the past, you weren't suppose to go past 150 air miles from your farm, and it has to be for farm use only. Though I've found out that those rules have been relaxed in recent years. I too know people with farm tags that travel over 1000 miles from home, and their travels have nothing to do with farm use. Then, you run into possible issues with other states you go into. What are their rules and regulations? I don't know. But, like some of you, I know folks that have been doing that for years and have not run into any troubles. I suspect that the main issue that could come up would be if you're using your truck commercially. Then there's a lot of other rules you'd need to follow too. I've seen farm tags on SUV's being driven by soccer moms taking their kids to soccer games. Years ago that was illegal. I have no idea what the advantage is to running those tags versus regular vehicle registrations.

Being this crosses state lines the federal rules apply.

Under MAP21 under 26,000 pounds gross weight or gross vehicle weight ratings you can go anywhere in the United States. Over 26,000 pounds in the state you're based in or 150 air miles from home if traveling out of state.

You need to be transporting farm items, farm equipment, supplies related to the farm or product off the farm.

Was hauling a rear car clip on a farm trailer 10 miles up the road and the Hyway trooper that appeared to be 17 years old gave me a 80 dollar ticket for improper use of the trailer. If I had only remembered to throw a bale of hay in the clip. Hope you are luckier than me.
