a friends son just bought a 94 powerstroke. auto trans. it will not shift out of first unless you let off throttle. but once in second it shifts fine, until you stop and go back to first.
any ideas? i am thinking bad or sticking second gear solenoid, but do not want to give bad info.
There is no second gear solenoid. There are two shift solenoids. SS2 is off in first and on in second. But lifting off the go pedal doesn't affect the shift solenoid in any way. I suspect a problem in either the intermediate clutch or the intermediate one way clutch.

this is fishery...94 auto wasn't PSD...you sure bout dis Lucy?
title says 94, and it has an overdrive automatic trans in it.
may be a 95, but who knows what has been done to it?
it is a bit of an abortion though. fuel tank switch and WTS light are hanging, no hood latch cable, no front bumper, 4 inch pipes off turbo to a 8 inch tip in front of the rear wheel, cab wiring is hanging all over the place, radio is hooked up, but laying on the floor, rot in rear cab sides of the club cab, needs body mounts, and only has 4 working glow plugs.
it runs good once started and shifts good once you get out of first though.
he paid $1500 for it.
those were the things i saw when i took it for a ride yesterday.

But what engine is in it?
A quick way to tell the difference between and IDI and a Powerstroke is that the IDI has a throttle cable that goes to the injection pump. The Powerstroke does not have a throttle cable.
"Club cab" is a DODGE extended cab. If it's an F350, it's a crew cab. It also sounds like a transplant patient. The numbers referenced above would shed some light, and no, it's not trivia. Depending on how the job was done, it may have a wiring issue and/or the wrong PCM. Speaking of which, that would be another good data point - what's the PCM code?
club cab, extended cab, super cab. name really does not matter with how the trans shifts..
i do not have any warranty plate info, the tag is long gone.
when he got it it worked fine. they drove it home 113 miles. a week later he felt it not shift out of first. added 2 quarts of trans fluid, and it has been like this since he added the ATF, which was two weeks ago.

Sounds like it is a wonder that it starts and drives at all. Is he wanting toto fix this thing up or just work it around the farm? If it is the latter then maybe he just drives it accordingly
Sounds like a $1500 headache Tom. There can't be much for scrap yards in Antarctica for used parts and it doesn't sound like it's worth new ones. Good luck. Darrell
