E99 Sitting In Storage. Major problems?

I have an early99 7.3 with just over a 100,xxx miles on it. It belonged to my grandfather years ago and it has been sitting in storage in our shop for just under 7 years due to family issues. Now before i get too crazy with it, should I be catious of possibly bad injectors from the truck sitting for too long without being driven? I'm just wondering if there will be any major engine problems or things I should do immediately before I make it my next daily driver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You did not mention if you have run it or not. If it were me I would start with all new fluids at the very least. As far as the injectors go I would think that tired/brittle O-rings may be an issue. Mechanically who knows. Running it (after fresh fluids) will tell the story, preferably with a proper scan tool connected.

As mentioned ALL fluids (including diesel) and filters should be changed, new batteries and then I would try and fire her up and see what she tells you.

One thing I would also suggest is getting an OBDII reader so you can actually watch what she is doing if any problems do surface.

We will all be here to help if you do run into any issues. You can also check out the tech folder sticky at the top of the forum for some pointers and things to watch for....

I would save my money on OBD II reader. They cannot read our trucks.

There are several other apps/programs that can but not the generic parts store obd II reader even though the port is identical.

I would love to hear how it responds when you get it ready and turn the key.

Like said, new fluids are a must. It might also be beneficial to drain the fuel bowl to get as much of the old fuel out as you can. depending on the route you want to take getting the diesel out of the tank, it would be a good time to do the hutch and harpoon mod.

Whatever it may need be glad it was stored inside a shop, if it was outside you might be doing brake lines, fuel lines, and some body work too.

Agreed with all above, plus a warning; no starting fluid. If glow plugs are working they can fire off the ether at the wrong time.

Welcome to FTE!

I've pulled a few diesels out of long term storage, 89 F250 idi, 93 international 4700 with a DT466, and several tractors, a mobile crane. All stored 7 plus years, with a very similar situation to boot. If you want to save yourself major fuel headaches, drop the tank get rid of all the old fuel clean it if it has debris. Then do the hutch/ harpoon, since your there anyway. Fill it up and add power service biocide to the tank. Then open the filter housing to drain into a bucket, leave it open and turn the key on for a few seconds. This will clean out the line. Now change the filter, close the drain, prime it (key on until fuel pump shuts off X3) and fire that ol pig up! (After changing all the other fluids)

I've had biological growth problems in every diesel I've pulled out of storage and sorely regretted every time I didn't just clean the fuel system on day one. My 89 was the first and it plugged 8 fuel filters bad enough to stall the truck before I figured it out. Then I cleaned the next couple and had no problems. Then I got lazy with an 80 ton mobile crane and had it stall out in the middle of a left hand turn from one busy highway onto the next. Never again. You won't stall a super duty 7.3 with it's beefy electric lift pump. But you could push garbage right through the filter.

Also note if you live anywhere where the temperature crosses back and forth across the dew point regularly, and the shop wasn't climate controlled and the tank wasn't full, you could have a significant amount of water in the tank. Just another good reason to drop the thing and be done with it.

Waking up to more than I expected! Thank you for taking the time to help me everyone I've gathered lots of information and I'm soon to pur it to the test!

However. What does the harpoon mod consist of? I plan on dropping my tank to drain it due to living in Michigan I'm sure the tank has more water in it now than fuel.

By the way, this truck is an ECSB and has no rust, it has never seen a winter, and it was maintenances regularly when my grandfather was still driving.

An 18 year old Michigan truck that never saw a winter???

This should help you...https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-worth-it.html

Hutch mod addresses fuel flow, Harpoon mod addresses the tank vent preventing you from filling all the way up and having a mess to boot.

And last...but not least...I'm not offended but what we have is a SuperCab, not an extended cab, I wouldn't want anybody to spank a new member here. Good luck with your new ride.

Harpoon is trimming of some of the fuel fill neck that protrudes into the tank. Once the tank is down and sending unit is out it's the easiest mod ever.
