My 7.3 skips when driving, completely random, but it did skip many times in a row when driving over a bridge, moisture seem to be the culprit somehow. I have replaced CPS, UVCH, Glow Plug, Glow plug relay. I have not replaced the harness from outside the valve cover to the CPU that controls them. Its a 200.000km truck (125.000) miles, that has been well kept and seen little towing in its life.
How did you fix your 7.3 from skipping? When it was not a CPS?
Thanks
(Sorry for asking this question so much, but there is no here who can help me, or want to)
Im having a hard time believing its the injectors, the problem is very intermitten, and only last for a millisecond or so. Its get a hiccup, and the gas pedal resets its position, even though i hold it down. It has only stalled once. Can fuel quality be the issue? I would love to fill a full tank, but its no point paying 300usd for a full tank if i have to buy other stuff to make it run, there is about 1/5 of fuel in the tank now.
I was not suggesting it was your injectors, I was saying that was the cause of my skip.
To figure out what your cause is you will need to start doing some diaognostics test. The cylinder contribution and buzz test is just a good place to start.
Yes, bad fuel can absolutely cause your engine to skip. More importantly it can ruin an injector fairly quick. If you suspect bad full and only have 1/5 of a tank I would drain and replace asap. Fwiw.... poor fuel supply can also cause a skip.
Ok, guess it's my best bet to fill at least half a tank of fresh diesel. Sorry if I sounded rude, that is my mediocre English language skills that does it :-) Haven't it been for this forum, and other like it. It would be impossible to own a Us truck in Norway. The norwegian price for OEM glow plug relay for example is 467USD (no kidding) So it's impossible to to just buy parts, as there are no US Ford dealership in Norway, and the shop that does have parts for US Ford's, is just taking advantage of those who don't know any better, we got Chevy though :P

I did not take it as rude, I was just saying that in my case it was injectors. There are many issues that can cause a skip. Injectors are just 1 of them.
Can you order parts from a U.S. Vendor ? I'd think rockauto or Amazon should ship to Norway. I order stuff directly from china frequently and recently found some parts for my 1949 jeep in the Netherlands on eBay.
Yeah I ordered all my parts from the US, the only downside is shipping time, and the time it takes when you order the wrong parts, my Ex sat for 4 months waiting for the harness under the valve cover I ordered a IPC sensor from eBay, maybe it will fix it. Tomorrow I will change the oil in the engine and the top end.
The previous owner changed the ICM due to water getting in, my truck sits for the most parts outside, and it rains allot here on the west coast. Can a failing ICM cause this intermittent problem? My guess is that the guys who replaced it, did not relocate it. Bumps in the road seem to affect the engine too, almost like some wires are shorting when it happens. Anyway my plan tomorrow is to change the oil, do that test on the injectors, look for exposed wires and have a look at the ICM. The truck does not give any codes. Except P0603 (KAM memory) and P0605 (glow plug?)
Let's go back and start over... Let's define the skip. Does your truck have a tuner on it or anything connected to the PCM?
What year is your Excursion? All but a very few Ex's have California emissions and GPCM (Glow Plug Control Module) vs. the Glow Plug relay in the Pick Up trucks.
I ask about the Tuner because I had a "skip". Driving down the road, on a smooth surface, the truck would skip/buck. Some time the tachometer would drop and dash lights would illuminate, other times, the motor would skip and keep going.
Several times it died on me, but restarted without issue. I replaced a number of sensors as well as unplugged by Fuel Bowl Heater (it's tied to the PCM circuit).
Nothing solved my problem. The end result was the "chip" was causing my issue. I removed the chip and have been just fine for 5K miles.
Before throwing money at this, look in the 7.3 forum for the "Diagnostics" thread started by Tugly. This will help you log data with AE or the slower Torque Pro. You can also look at Forscan lite for android or Forscan full for a laptop.
These can help you watch the sensors.
Before throwing parts under the valve covers, make sure your connections are tight on the outside as well as the inside (.50 Cent Mod). Make sure your connections at the injectors are set.
It is important to note that any injector error will throw a P1316 code (IDM- Injector Driver Module). Only a quality scanner will scan the IDM for the injector specific codes. The P1316 will set the CEL (Check Engine Light) on your dash.
If you don't have CEL, you more than likely don't have an injector issue.
The CAM sensor is a cheap and easy test ($25 USD), but when you get to harnesses and gaskets the price goes up to $200 USD.
The P0605 suggests you have a Chip installed. P0603 is nothing to sweat.
I ship Excursion parts to Germany for a friend several times a year. The shipping is CRAZY high, and then he has to pay customs on all the parts on top of that. Not as simple as one would think...
Wow, great answer Jesser It's a 2002, I have the same problem you did, and I have installed a tune, from my newly bought SCT X4 device, and I have been driving with the device connected, to read fault codes as they come., will to drive with it disconnected tomorrow. My 7.3 have no emssions gadgets, doesn't even have a catalyst converters, and it's stock like that Nicmike, I really want to buy parts in the us for my Excursion, I want a Dana 60 with coil springs and some other parts, if you can get it.
I'll send you a PM if that's ok? And yeah, in Norway you have to pay 25% tax on the price of the parts and shipping to the country, pluss a few extra fees. I have been on the thought of shipping my Ex to the US for a complete rebuild and 2011 update, as that would muuuch cheaper then sending parts here.
We just air freighted a car to London to be on the set of Top Gear, it cost about $12,000. I'd think the slow boat would be considerably less expensive.
Oh yeah I need allot of parts, and it has to be shipped by sea, when im going to buy, I will ship it all combined. Regarding the tires, the reason I want a Dana 60 is because I want to run 44x19.5 tires on it, just for off road use of course, off roading in the snow is allot of fun, you can get almost anywhere in the county. So gearing will have to high, and more parts then just a front axle is needed I am currently making a list of parts needed for the job. The company that builds the icelandic trucks are here in Norway as well, but the Ex is to old to build :-/
