I have a line on a 66 F100 I want to drive a few miles from where it is now to home. It runs fine but won't shift. The guys says the C4 in it is from a '73 Cougar. His dad owned it so he doesn't know a lot about the history. It's got plenty of fluid. I'm guessing it's a mod valve or vacuum problem, but can't really work on it where it is. Could I drive it without doing damage by manually shifting through the D,2,1 gears? I've never done this with an automatic.

What size is the engine? C4's were installed with 240/300 I-6's. The only V8 used in 1965/66's was the 352, the only A/T was MX Cruise-O-Matic.
I currently have a small block C-6 in my '64 behind a 351W. It won't shift automatically, and I have too many other things to work on to worry about that. So, I shift it manually, and have been doing so for five years (about 15,000 miles) with no noticeable problems.
I think the c4 ( taxing my feeble mind here),has a centifical shifter that can stick when not used, not sure if it will manually shift if it is stuck. You wont hurt the tranny shifting manually or even driving in low gear, but you can hurt the engine if it wont shift up. How far are you driving?
