Charging System Problem

Hello,

I have a 2000 E150. New battery and new alternator but the battery is not receiving charge. Alternator tested good at the store. Battery purchased at Costco 2 days ago and tested good in holding charge.

What could have gone wrong?

Thanks.

Kin

Check all wiring and connection, all good. Just not enough voltage (11.7v).

Could it be the belt (replaced 8 months ago) or the belt tensioner?

What is the back story? Did this problem just show up and the van was running fine before? Or did you just purchase the van with this pre existing problem?
FYI.. those bench top alternator tests are notoriously unreliable.

Van was running fine until now. Old alternator bearings were worn out. Got replacement for it then it is not charging.

Good possibility your replacement alternator is defective. Seen this happen more than once. A friend of mine bought a new GM alternator, didn't charge so he took it back for a replacement, still not charging. We went nuts trying to figure out what the problem was. So for the heck of it he bought a rebuilt one, and it cured it. Yup, two bad alternators, new, not rebuilt.

Best way to test the alternator is to take a multimeter and set it to DCV. Start the van and let it warm up. Then uncover the "field" connection which is the rubber boot coming out at the top rear of the alternator. Place the red lead on the meter to the "field" and the black lead on the positive battery post. If it is less than 12 volts the alternator is not charging.

On the back of the alternator is the +Black/orange big cable; then there is a plug with white, orange w/grey, green w/black, which one is the wire responsible for exciting the alternator to charge?

The big black and orange cable is the one. That sends electricity directly to the positive battery post.
