Battery light at acceleration?

I have a 1995 Explorer XLT. About three weeks ago, I noticed that the battery light would come on during moments of rapid acceleration (such as on highway on-ramps, when the RPMs topped 2000). It would go of again once the desired speed was reached and the "kick-down" facility disengaged (is that the proper description?), allowing the transmission to resume "normal" operation.
Today, I noticed the light coming on during even mild accelerations AND staying on for the majority of the drive. It was intermittent- it seemed to flash on and off at times for seemingly no particular reason- but mostly it was ON.
I checked the battery terminals and they seem tight and clean. Could this be a bad voltage regulator? Or a short in a wire somewhere? When the light does come on, am I correct to assume the vehicle is running off the battery at that point?
Please help!

Light on

Check to see that your fan belt is tight enough and dosn't slip during acceleration. Push down on the belt with your finger ( engine OFF)anywhere thats its wide open and not supported. It should give about a quarter of an inch to MAX a half inch,Or just tighten it to make sure.

If the belt is slipping either it is really stretched and worn out (look for cracks in the belt) or the belt tensioner is worn out or even broken which could cause the belt to slip around the alternator pulley and prevent the alternator from charging the battery which would explain the idiot light coming on. I'd look under the hood with the truck running and see if the belt was slipping around the alternator pulley, particularly when given a blip on the throttle. It's also quite possible your alternator is dying and not providing a sufficient charge to the battery, alternator output should be 14 volts or so. Voltage regulator is another possibility though I have never heard of one going out but I'm no mechanic....
