leaking, excessive slack, and ive seen it on some fords but not all but power steering assist that will work one way but not the other, ie will turn left with assist but no assist turning right or will turn right with assist but no assist turning left.

My 96 F 250.

I havent noticed any leaking. However it is has been hard to turn. There is excessive play. Yesterday it was acting like it wasnt going to turn (like worse than no power assist). It acts as though it is binding and sometimes the steering wheel turns , but the wheels dont.

I dont know if these have a rag joint or like a u joint in the steering shaft. The steering shaft has dust covers all over it so things arent really visible.

Yipes! If the steeering wheel turns and the wheels don't you obviously have a serious problem. Be careful!

Yes indeed, it is going a little crazy. I will have to get another set of eyes that know what they are doing to help me watch the shaft.

Maybe steering shaft to steering wheel splines are stripped. Did anyone replace the steering wheel?

Ive seen this on a newer ford truck the gear box was falling apart internally and caused excessive slack in the steering wheel.

This could be bearings in the column. Will report back.

How could bearings cause the equivalent of a disconnect?

Some of this is turning out to be the column bearings and bushings. Steering column came out last night. Once I get it back together and operational I will go down the shaft and sector box to see what else is wrong.

I am already researching shafts with U joints as well as a Redhead sector box. Parts will be close to $500, but well worth it to do it right.

Good plan - do it right while in there. The only problem with RedHead, besides cost, might be if they need your box before they ship the rebuilt one. I don't remember how that works, and it might be different for a later box.

Top picture is the column disassembled. Bottom picture is a the big bearing in the bottom of the steering shaft. It is one of three. One large and two small. We are in the process of cleaning and lubricating everything.
