If You Don't Drive A Ford, Why Not???
Generally speaking, in an automatic, a fluid/filter change without a flush or draining the TC will require anywhere from 5-7 quarts. If its a complete flush, in general, the capacity if 14-16 quarts.
Manual transmissions are usually measured in pints, although I'm not sure of total capacity, maybe 4-8 pints?

Total capacity is 7.6 pints of mercon ATF
If it is a gas ZF 5 speed
mercon multipurpose automatic transmission fluid 3.4 guarts
if a diesel ZF 5 speed
synthetic mercon multipurpose auto trans fluid 3.4 quarts
Quoted directly from the 1996 Ford CD repair manual
Even though it is more expensive, I believe that you can use the synthetic in either of the ZF 5 speeds.
You most likly have the M5OD
there should be a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and a fill plug on the drivers side halfway up. If I remember right, they are both either 7/8 or 15/16 size bolts. While your at it make sure a check the three rubber plugs for the shifter housing on the top of the trans for leaking. If they are they will need to be replaced soon as they can leak out trans fluid and ruin the trans before you know it.
