Yep, you have some soot there. That job rates as one of my least favorites. You speak of slight play. In and out I had none but side to side, top to bottom I had a little. I do believe that the slight side to side, top to bottom is normal as oil circulates around the shaft. If that helps you any.
Dude, if you're still considering this wheel, I've run it for awhile and like it. In my DP 80-ish HP tune I can hit 30psi at 5500ft on the otherwise stock turbo, but I rarely run that tune. I hit 25psi with my various 60HP tunes, and it's quite driveable
I rebuilt the turbo when I installed the new wheel, and documented it here, IIRC.

Not looking forward to it. Everything I've seen and read about replacing up pipes looks down right frustrating.
Well if you go with the IH bellowed pipes you can just cut the old ones off and eliminate that grief. Once the new ones are installed you are done - for a long time.
