Question about AC/Blower assembly

What's the purpose of that small piece of foil insulation by the AC evaporator core connections? I know some insulation used to be there, but there are only some threads left. After taking the whole assembly out to clean/inspect, I can't figure out what it was possibly for.

You mean this? I would guess insulation for the close proximity of the box to the exhaust manifold.

Well, the manifold really isn't that close. I suppose it just a general heat shield for the engine. I just don't quite understand the logic of the shape and placement of it.
