Neighbor's Landscape trailer was caught on Video going down the street hooked up to a Thief's truck. So, I'm about to get a new Enclosed Trailer, what do you guys recommend for a Trailer Coupler Lock? There seems to be quite a few out there and I know they are not fool proof, But, what do you all think of a good solid base to work with? Coupler is 2 5/16"'
Nothing is going to stop somebody with determination, so my vote is go the inexpensive route with something that locks the latch. Reasoning is that I once worked at a place with ~3K people where armed security guards roamed the parking lots and there were security cameras as well; yet a lot of catalytic converts disappeared on sunny days.
Sure, you can go complex, but this can also add to the damage.
If recovery with least amount of damage is the goal, consider installing a battery and tracking device. Actually, if the thief uses the tags on the trailer and goes past a toll facility, chances are good that you will get tracking for free.
so true, if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it, best we can do is make it as difficult for them as possible. I've got a coupler lock, coupler latch lock and wheel lock on my enclosed.
Have a bolt on coupler with a non standard bolt pattern. When the trailer is stored remove the coupler, and store it separately from the trailer. Immobilizing the wheels is another good option. Either remove them all together, or secure them somehow. The more work required to steal the sooner the thief looks elsewhere.
I agree that if they want it bad enough they will get it. I don't like any of the locks, you can find YouTube videos showing pretty much all of them being defeated without too much trouble.
If you don't need a weight distributing hitch, consider pulling the standard coupler off and replacing it with a Lock and Roll hitch. The odds are pretty good the thief won't have any way of hitching up to it.
The padlock that comes with my Reese security setup closes so closely to my locking pin that I think it would be hard to get a saw blade on the shackle. But if you drill out the lock mechanism I suspect it would defeat the entire lock.
That Lock N Roll is cool looking, but you still need safety chains. It wont take much to wrap those around well enough, and steal the trailer. I don't see any weight distribution options either.
I've tried with minimal success. Someone real wants to do it they will and a lotta times when they think it's easy they get frustrated and just damage things.
