Again.. Hot wiring..
Ok I posted a few months ago about hot wiring a 72 i6 300 4.9l, i finally got around to attempting to do this. After a few failed attempts, googling wiring diagrams, burning up wires, i'm back here if somebody has an idea.
I'm just looking for only opening the coil pack so I can then figure out the rest.
I've tried : positive of coil pack to positive of battery, no click. Tried positive of coil to battery with also negative of coil pack to battery, no click. Tried grounding coilpack to the base itself with positive of coil on battery, no click. Tried all these options again with a new coilpack, no click. I have 0 wires to go off of so I'm making my own as I go. (No saftey switches etc)
Anybody have a straight diagram on just how to open the coil pack? I understand if the distributor is bad it won't spark but the coil pack would click and open.
Thanks, Daren.
You just need a 12v source to the POSITIVE terminal on the coil. That is all.
It gets a ground through the points in the distributor. You will not hear anything when you apply power. You have to rotate the engine to get the points to open/close to fire the coil.
Once you have the 12v lead to the coil, crank the engine. It should start as long as the points/condenser are good. Do not run it with 12v very long as you will burn up the points. It needs to be only about 9v to the coil during running.
I need to ask, what is this "no click" you keep mentioning? Is that you trying to start the engine with the key? You are getting nothing from the starter? That has nothing to do with the coil. To jump start the starter you need to jump the solenoid. Is it the solenoid that you don't hear clicking?

Thank you.
Thank you.
There is no noticeable click from the coil when you energize it. If it did make noise, it would only be "IF" the points were opening/closing when the engine is turning over.
Run the wire and crank it. If the distributor is okay, it should start.
Whoever told you there should be a click is, well, confused. (To put it nicely)
If there was gonna be a long term Hotwire, such as if, say you lost the key but needed to get home, then you can also energize the alternator to keep everything running. But like train said, the points and condenser will burn up first.
