I was just curious if anyone had any tips on carrying a 7 1/2 foot long surf board in the back of a pickup. I usually use the Yakima rack on my car but since I now have a pickup I think I might as well give it a try.
I have bunge cords as well as tie downs and bed liner.
I made a rack to carry kayaks.
Using 2x3's I built it about 4 inchs off the bed rails. This allows me to carry 1-4 kayaks in the area behind the cab normally used by a canopy. hardly any wind resistance, and the bed is still available to carry gear. After lathering it in several coats of polyurathene it looks pretty good. If you are interested, I can send pics.
Looks great Stan! I will be building one of these right away. This should work really well for my surfboards. What did you use where the horizontal and vertical pieces join? Perhaps wood screws or bolts? Also, what did you use to secure the vertical 2X3's where they slip into the rails?
Cool.
I used nails and metal brackets, however this was a prototype so if I was building another one I would glue and screw it all.
The rail pockets did not match the 2x3 so I had to trim them to fit. It sits in snugly (tapping with a rubber mallet get it out easy) and I don't suspect it to ever come out, but I do tie a loop to my bed hook just in case a freak gust of wind trys to make my kayaks fly :-)
