Installing new king pins in my '66. Is there a way to effectively pack the bearing with grease before intalling them, like you would with wheel bearings?
Thanks.

There will be a hole for a Zerk (grease) fitting in the spindle used for this purpose.
In 1963, Ford introduced "Lifetime Lubrication" put rubber plugs in the zerk fitting threaded holes located in the spindles, tie rods, draglink and etc.
87907-S8 .. Spindle Zerk Fitting: 1/4 -28 straight. Available from any auto parts store.
My 1966 Ford truck factory service manual says to pack the bearings with chassis grease before installation (or reinstallation). I tried using my trusty K-D bearing packer, and also "hand" packing with the palm of my hand but neither method seemed to get much grease into the bearing. The bearings are pretty well enclosed in the metal shells. I hope Bill is right and that grease from the Zerk fitting on the bottom will promote lubrication!
I'd definitely try and hand pack them. This will be the only opportunity to really get the grease in there. The zerk will only allow greasing up to the point that grease leaks out of the path of least resistance. Greasing kingpins should be done both with the wheel hanging free and then with weight on it while turning the spindle left and right. You will leak a lot of grease out but this is what it takes since there are no seals.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try hand packing again before reassembly, and enlist a helper when hitting the grease fittings with the grease gun.
