I am going to be a full time RVer this April. Picking up my new Lariat F350 in a couple of weeks and my new 5th wheel a week later. Does anyone have a suggestion on the best Dish system I should get. I'm leaning towards a system not attached permanently to the roof.

We have been using a Dish Tailgater with a 211K receiver for 5 years without any problems except for losing the receiver do to power problems at a park last fall. If our Tailgater quits it would be replaced with a Winegard Playmaker for Dish or a Winegard X2 for Dish. The Playmaker has a bigger dish for less money so it has a stronger signal and the X2 had a lot bigger dish and it will receive Dish Network Eastern feeds but it's also more $.

I just use an old single LNB dish from Directv on a tripod. I take the box from my workshop when camping. No added cost. The dish was one replaced at our house when we went to a 3 LNB dish. I like free.

Attached is the most convenient. Unattached gives you the most flexibility. I have an extra dish that is mounted on a surveyor's tripod that I can move to a clear area for signal. It requires manual alignment, which I have a Directv installers meter to do so. There are auto align unattached dishes as well.

The other consideration is the service, Dish or Directv and whether you personally require HI-DEF or don't care. I mention because there are no stand-alone(unattached) auto-align DirecTV capable dishes that will receive Hi-DEF. Your only options are permanently mounted, or on a Tripod with a home style reflector like I use. This however, is not an issue for DISH network.

I gave up Dish a year ago and cut the cord, no regrets. When I had it I looked into it for the camper and decided the only one that would work is a tripod mount or tailgator, you have to be able to move the dish around to get a signal. Good luck if you are parked in the trees. Over the air and streaming works fine for us.

Hey Mike, I never claimed that I am roughing it..... 3 tv's, satellite, 2 DVR's. Extra dish fell off the installers truck. Bought the rest off of e-bay, and we take boxes out of our house. I like cheap too, but there are limits....
