I bought my stainless, polished bumpers from Mac's which have been on the truck for 5 years with no issues or rust. They are a female dog to drill though.
I put a stainless one on the back and a chrome one on the front (bought them at two different times). After five years they both looked new. The chrome is just a little brighter looking if you set them side by side. Alone, the average person would not tell the difference. Either is definitely better than black...
I do not know the grade of SS on bumpers. If it is 304, then it will have 18% chromium. I used SS on my bed strips and was able to achieve a decent shine. If you want high luster, then chrome is best.
SS is more durable but will require buffing if exposed to the elements. Chrome plating is dependent upon the plating process. It can flake and pit if the substrate is not properly plated.
My front bumper is from Dennis Carpenter, The worst thing about it is it is a 1/2'' longer on one side? I am going to trim that side down. The stainless scratches very easy but it polishes out.
Absolutely. I had the crack on the right side repaired. Now the bumpers just need fresh paint. Stainless has its place to be sure, but for some trucks, it just wouldn't be right. Black has its place too. LOL.
I bought a polished SS bumper from Dennis Carpenter and am disappointed in the quality. It looks like the stamping dies have not been maintained and there are ripples, highly polished ripples but obvious ripples none the less, on the top rear edge where the bumper curves around on each side between the frame mounts and the bumper ends. I was going to send it back but unfortunately I damaged it before I could do that.
