Hey all, I am usually on the OBS side, but looking at 99-00 Superduties. My question is what do you guys do for tuning? TS Chips or Hydras or something I have never heard of? Thanks.
As Rikster said, Hydra with GearHead tunes and could not be happier with them. Daily driving, heavy towing, high idle, no start, stock and regular tow is all I have and need.
Not sure if it is the same Hydra as the OBS, but you could probably find out just by going to the PHP or GH sites.

Sounds good. I'd go with GH myself. I always hear good things for tuning the 7.3 by them.
PHP Hydra with Gearhead (GH) tunes written by Matt. Non-proprietary, if you don't like Matt's tunes then there are at least 10 others who are writing tunes for the Hydra. Gearhead/Matt offers free updates to the tunes as you upgrade your truck: injectors, turbo, transmission, etc. regardless of where you buy those upgraded parts.
Many of us who are currently running the Hydra have tried most of the other platforms, I have run 4, and this is where we finally landed after spending a ton of money on the other non-Hydra stuff.
GH offers the least amount of smoke, lowest EGT's, best transmission shifts, smoothest/most linear powerband based upon throttle input I have experienced. ICP remains high due to keeping FIPW in check.
The truck in my sig is a work truck and tows to its' max rated weight.
I came from the Lost Sheep of DP-Tuner camp and now I run Matt's tunes on both my trucks. Better fuel economy, better power, smoother running, better shifting, not to mention better customer service.
Matt personally tuned both of my trucks and I can't complain, there are many out there who write tunes for these trucks, but none like Matt.
I can also chime in for GREAT results from Matt at Gear Head. I had canned tunes (Diablo) before (I did like them for what they are), and these GH tunes are much smoother and crisp. EGTs are better managed. Service was excellent, as was their timeliness and KNOWLEDGE of what I was needing and what they provide.
I looked on GH website and it only mentions single shots. Aren't all 99-03 split shots? I'll be looking at Hydra and Matt for sure.
Hey bud, I'll second gearhead. We use them from stock to large hybrids in all different applications. The reason I suggest them is they are the only tuner that has listened over the years to focus on heat and high altitude challenges vs smoke and big HP numbers. Taking a 500 hp truck and cutting it back to reliably haul a 15-17,000lb 5er over eisenhower or cottonwood pass took a bit of testing, but they were the only ones that even came close with a TS style chip.

Thanks Nick! I am going to give them a shot for sure. I keep hearing good things and nothing bad. I gotta find my new truck first!! LOL It does seem they listen white a bit and operate based on that. I like it. I'll report back when it all comes together.
Or you guys could start a new thread with your questions...
Their questions were definitely going in a bit of a different direction than what you were inquiring about, so I cut the posts and started a new thread for them.
