Hi, just received a floormat from Dennis Carpenter. Was the original 1950 Ford F-1 floormat slit on top to slide around the steering column or should I remove the steering wheel and slide it down?
Thanks for any input.
I just bought a 53-56 floor mat from Mac's on ebay. I messaged them to be sure it had the perforations to cut out for the gear shift lever and the e-brake as the picture showed that they had on the ebay page. They said that it did. I arrived yesterday and it didn't have the perforations for the shift lever and ebrake. For the steering column and the pedals there are just holes. The original mats had a slit and holes for the column and pedals. The mat I have in my 54 has them and the perforations and is better quality. I bought it from a FTE member that is not longer a member. It must have been NOS or an earlier and better repop. The one I just bought is a lot thicker than the original too. BTW, teh Mac mat has Carpenter's name embossed at teh bottom. Not a happy trucker!
I got one from carpenter it fit nice I choose to slide it over the steering column just because I think it looks better and the truck was apart anyway.

Thanks guys. Bummer on the mat from Macs. I know Carpenter sells two styles, one with cut out and one with out. Maybe they messed up your order.
26 Tudor, is that a pic of your truck, if yes what color is it? I just bought an original unrestored and I think the color of mine is Aspen Blue. Is yours original color?
Thanks
Tudor 26. thanks for the full picture. Real nice looking truck! I asked about the color because when I have looked at the Ford color charts mine looks like it's Aspen Blue yet looks closer to yours. I will need to look again in the sunlight.
Abe, yes my mat also needs to be cut for the floor shift. It's the column, pedals and hi beam switch that is cut out. That's why I wonder why they do not slit the mat for going around the column. I understand not cutting the floor shift since they would need to stock it both ways. The mat from Carpenter I got was 8c-8113000.
I read your post again and now see what you were saying. My mind was thinking 1950 F-1 when I first read it. I also have a 1953 F-250 and ordered a mat from carpenter along with the F-1 mat. No cut out for the shifter or e brake as you know. Carpenter said guys just slice it and slide it over. Seems odd that Ford did not have a boot to cove the opening?

Here are the pictures I sent to Mac's to plead my case. I don't think I would have bought it if they didn't say it had punch outs for the shifter and ebrake.
Pic of the back side of new mat. You see perforations for the pedals and dimmer and gas pedal cutout but do not see any perforations for the gear shift and ebrake.
Here is a pic of the mat in my 54 F100. It has the perforations on the top side of the mat. And notice it is a lot thinner. This is what the original mats looked like. I don't know if my mat is a NOS mat or a good early repop.
And here is a pic of the original mat from my 55 F350. This mat I am sure is the original from 1955. It's the best picture I have now as my truck is in storage for the winter. Notice the slits and holes for the pedals.
Abe, the pic with the perfs seems like an aftermarket mat in my opinion. I can't see Ford making a one mat fits all. It's possible just seems incorrect.
The pic of the mat that has slits also looks like someone razor knifed it for full removal. I can see the column slit bit the pedals as well? They could have easily installed the mat then bolted on the pedal pads. I have not installed my mat yet but I am leaning toward removing the steering wheel and sliding it down. Just seems that's how they would of done it at the factory. You may have the original mat that was slit sometime after it was new when someone serviced it or cleaned out the cab?
I purchased one from Dennis Carpenter, the expensive one that is supposed to be original mold, and it has NO cutout or marking for floor shift so I'm in the same boat. Just for comparison i bought the "cheapo" version from Macs for my 52 (unresotored) and while it had imperfections it DID have the hole for floor shift. So basically i spent more for less with the expensive model. Honestly, while i do appreciate the repop market i'm actually getting tired of working with all the junk that is being reproduced. I saved everything from my teardown and i find myself going to my parts stash and restoring rather than using "new".

I am sure Ford made one mat for all the models of trucks. Hence the perforations to fit each model.
The mat in my 55 F350 is brittle and 62 years old. Yes either someone slit the mat at the pedals or it has become torn over the years. Here is a pic of my 54 mat at the pedals. You see a hole for the pedals but also a short slit that goes as high as the lines in the mat. You can also see the slit and holes for the steering column and the remote shifter tube.
Not to steer away from the mat thread...but this just went to the body shop for some meadow green paint...but in summarizing who makes the most heavy duty mat for my f-4.....
