One question for clarification. I just watched a YouTube video and noticed after new pad went on and the guy turned the wheel, I heard the pads rubbing the rotor. It didn't look it spun very freely to me.
Just to clarify, my tire will turn. It is not locked or frozen. I can hear the pads on the rotor, however. I can just feel a little resistance. I didn't smell anything either when I drove it. I can just tell that it's not rolling as good as before.
If you're changing calipers anyway I would seriously consider doing the rubber lines at the same time. You'll be bleeding the system anyway. New rubber lines at Napa should be under $30. There is no way to know if they've collapsed by looking at them. A lot of them have been going bad lately, seems these trucks are hitting the age where rubber is going bad.
You'll always hear the pads rubbing a little. But if one is turning harder than the other it's probably just starting to hang. It could also hang worse when hot.
Looked at things a little closer this morning. I drove it last night as well....
When I jacked up front end this morning I noticed that both sides were spinning at almost the same rate. The passenger side may have a little tad more resistance but not much. On both sides, the pads are touching the rotors but the tires are spinning freely. Maybe a normal thing.... Pads were not oem, picked up at Napa. If both sides are touching, then this would be another issue, correct?
Fluid level topped off.
So, I was thinking of putting some miles on it today to see if I smelled anything or it would change at all. Since both are touching about the same is there any harm? Bad idea?
Pads should just kiss the rotors. But not enough to slow the tire when you spin it.
If you want to check if it's a broken down hose. Drive it until it hangs, and crack the bleeder on the caliper. If it releases there is a good chance it's the hose.
I don't deal with this any more. I've been burned so many times doing brakes that when one brake goes bad on a vehicle I literally replace everything but the Master cylinder and abs unit.
