2011 6.7 Regen
I am thinking of purchasing a 2011 F250 6.7l to replace my recently totaled 94 IDI turbo. I used to work for Ford as a Diesel Tech but I don't have too much experience with the 6.7's as I have went back to school for heavy duty diesel, and I am back in the shop summers and after every 2 months during semester breaks. Most of my experience comes from 7.3s, 6.0s, and 6.4s. I am aware that the 2011's were known for turbo issues, dropping glow plugs, and turbo fittings. My main question is about the regen. Now granted I will be going back and forth to school (climbing a mountain to get to campus), various job sites (probably local), but I take 180 mile trips every few weeks or so to go back home. I know with some diesels the region can be a pain in the *** with the constant speed and the timing since it can be sudden. What are the requirements for an efficient regen on the 6.7? Or would it be in my best interest to just pay little extra for a good condition 7.3 PSD? Any help is appreciated.
The one I am thinking about purchasing is a 2011 F250 XL (with power equipment) crew cab long bed with 120k. Without having the dealer get back to me yet I believe it is bone stock.
Ford made it so regens go almost unnoticed. Just drive it like you would any other truck.
With what you've described as your driving style, you'll be just fine. The only time it would ever be an issue is if you did a ton of idling all the time or nothing but very very short trips. Even then the truck would give you a message at some point telling you to drive for a while until a completed regen took effect.
Everything else as far as maintenance requirements, the truck will tell you when those are due (oil changes, fuel filter changes, checking coolant, etc).
Ford learned it's lesson with the 6.0L and the 6.4L engines. These 6.7L trucks are pretty much dummy proof now.
You'll enjoy it.
I have a friend at one of the dealerships here in Colorado that is a Sr. Master tech and is the main diesel guy in their shop, probably one of the best Ford dealer techs in the state. He is a believer in the 6.7L and has told me many times that Ford did a really good job on these motors. He doesn't see anywhere close to the amount of trucks coming in with a 6.7L as he has with 6.4L and 6.0L.
