Looked at an 2003 with 115000 miles. Started a little harder than I thought it should cold but just wrote it off initially. Went to leave the dealership and it lacked power almost like the egr was gummed up. Stopped at the light took off and heard a big pop(passenger side intercooler boot at the intercooler blew off) got home and no start hot( obviously a high pressure oil leak or hpop). When I got to looking at it I see the egr is deleted. Watching the ficm voltage on my scan gauge when cruising at 55 the voltage fluctuated from 45-51.5 volts. Never seen that before. That's what I know, shoot me some opinions. Run or think it's a matter of the price reflecting the condition.
This truck will need a little love, but unless it has cooling system issues, I'd go for it.
The HPOP will need to be replaced with either a Dieselsite pump or better, Ed will have to spend some time with the FICM, and you'll have to do the normal, fluids and filters.
Will the fitting for an air test from my 05 I had work on this truck? I know the icp is in a different place but I assume it's the same just under the turbo instead of the valve cover. I still have a new ipr also is that the same? I know there is no snap to connect fitting, is there stand pipes or dummy plugs? What is usually the common issues with the 03? I know the 05-07 decently well but not that familiar with the 03 and 04's.
No SP's or DP's on the early builds, unless it's the mid 04, then you had the aforementioned AND the old style pump.
The air fitting will work the same yes, just a bigger PITA to get at.
HPOP really no worse than a STC, and while your at it, I would reseal the oil rail, and if you are feeling adventurous reseal the injectors too, it's not a horrible job and likely something in your future anyway.......a cheap fix.
I want to say there was a slight diff on the IPR but don't quote me there, I do know the ICP was different but interchangeable IIRC
Don't let the early build scare you in spite of what some will say. Many here will attest to the early builds having more power and quicker spool times, plus you get the jet engine turbo whistle. Really no major differences from a wrenching standpoint.
Kids truck still has the TTY, was deleted many moons ago and runs great, tows whatever it needs to. 150k miles, granted I have done things like the HPOP, and resealed the items I mentioned but not bad jobs.
Throw the Atlas 40 at the FICM and you are good to go.
Unless you plan on racing your truck, leave the exhaust alone. Get an intake and give it more air to breathe but in talking to the guy who wrote the programming, there's some serious science to the exhaust system that allows for the quick spooling and insane power on these trucks when they're running right.
The swivel made getting it in there behind the IPR seem a bit easier, but next time I will try a non swivel hose. Once threads are started the non swivel hose can be used to twist versus only the swivel piece that was much smaller to grab in such a tight area.
Just be sure to power the IPR closed for a short time when using that port otherwise you'll just be dumping air into the crankcase.
From what I have been told any IPR will work on these years trucks, just like the ICP will.
The exhaust has already had a straight pipe put in, so no leaving it stock any more. I think it looks kinda cobeled so I was planning on putting on a 4 inch magnaflow exhaust down the road. I am thinking about talking to the friend of mine at the dealer and see if I can investigate where the high pressure oil leak is coming from before I would commit to it. What's the thoughts on the intercooler tube that keeps popping off? Bad clamp?

Might just be a case of not tight enough. There is a torque spec, but try a little hairspray after it's been cleaned up REAL good, then tighten it down until you can feel some resistance, about the same time you won't be able to move the spring.
Ok that seems easy enough, is there anyway to check the integrity of the head gaskets? Noticed some gurgling after we shut it off yesterday to verify the intercooler tube had come off.
Unless it's puking out of the degas by the cap, doubt you have HG issues, any smoke coming out the tailpipe other than fuel smoke? Any smell of coolant?
Doubt you have issues.........the gurgling was probably just pressures migrating.
Where is the coolant level at, cold, in the degas? Should be at or better yet below the min line which is actually the normal level.
No puking that I noticed in the 9 miles I drove it, level is about an inch of coolant in the degas. No smoke noticed out the tail pipe. No smell at all. I may run up and get the truck tomorrow and look it over closer. I have to talk to them and see where we're at on the price now that we know there is issues. Not a lot of regular cab diesels around in my area and I've wanted one for a while. I usually buy crew cabs so my wife isn't crazy about the regular cab. But she'll get over it lol.
Price should drop considerably if it does in fact need an HPOP. I would dare bet if they did it in house they would figure a grand for sure internal billed against it, with parts and labor at cost.
At any rate I'll wager they would rather sell it cheaper and let you wrench on it.
Well I talked to the dealer today and he said they are going to take it into their service Monday, and plan to fix it before selling it. I should hear back from them Monday but if it increases the price any I don't think I'd be interested anymore. Keep you guys posted. Thanks for the guidance.
