Gearing/Tire Size Question

Recently I found a Dana 50 from a '99 on Craigslist for $200. Couldn't pass it up. I've got misc rebuild parts on the way. Supposedly, it's a 3.73:1. I understand gear ratio vs tire size on the F250. What if I put the D50 on a compact or midsize with 35s? Being that a Dana 50 from a 7.3 diesel is way overkill, do I really need to change the gears? Keep in mind it was only $200 so don't bother to tell me it's crap and I should have bought a 60. But please help and I'll greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

If you are happy with 3.73 in whatever you are installing it in, then you are good.

Gear ratio and tire size work the same way on a Smart for 2 and Terex mine truck and everything in between.

Perhaps I don't understand gearing properly. But I've read on here that a 3.73 is good for 5k lbs, 425-525 ft/lbs. With that in mind, why couldn't it support a 351 on a smaller rig with 35s? Maybe what I read was wrong.

You are not providing all the variables. OEM tow ratings are, in part, based on ratios. Since this is a transplant with tires not found on the OEM vehicle (I guess....) no cross reference applies. Ditto torque capacity. If you put a 2.32 toploader 4 speed in front of 3.73s you are going to feed it a lot less torque than if put a near 7:1 granny in front of it.
