Hi I'm new here and the new proud owner of a 1978 F250 Ranger4x4 camper special. I decided to sell my Toyota Tundra and get something with a little more soul.(and a lot cheaper)
The bald tires that came on it are a LT235/85 16 they seam pretty small and skinny. Does anyone know what size would have come on the truck?
Or if I can go a little taller of a tire? The gearing seams pretty tall 4.10s? and I was thinking a taller would help on the freeway.
Thanks

The term "tall" is the inverse of what yer thinking. A 4.10 gear ratio is a low gear (numerically high) means the driveshaft turns 4.1 times for every one axle rotation. You'll be quick out of the hole but the rig will be turning higher RPMs at highway speed than, let's say, a high gear (numerically low) like a 2.79 ratio.
It is generally stated that rear gear between 3.25 to 3.73 is a good compromise between highway and in-town driving.... If you're thinking of going with bigger tires 35s or 37s, then your existing gear's effective ratio, sometimes called final drive ratio (considering the increased tire size), will calc out really well.
I suggest reviewing the RPM/tire size/rear gear ratio chart in JBGs catalog to determine what RPM you are turning now and what ya might be running with bigger tires.
It wears both emblems. camper special on the front of the front fenders and ranger right in front of the doors and on the glove box. It has dual batteries, the toolbox built into the bed, dual tanks,A/C, cruise control and delay wipers.(all look factory)
This may not be a possible combination but that is what I have and I only know the history of the truck for about 4 days.
Welcome to FTE buttwheat,,,, <~~ That's funny! Good one!!
As to tire size,,, are you staying with the stock steel rims,,, 16x7? You could easily go up to a 265/75/16 - is about a 31x10.50x16 or to 285/75/16 - which are about a 32 or 33x11.50x16 depending on manufacturer of course,, what engine do you have? 4.10's are great gearing if you don't plan on doing a lot of highway runnin, I have them in my 79 F250 4x4,, it has the 300 I6,,, and tires are next on the aganda,,, I am going to put the 255/85/16s off of my 77 onto it,, they are about a 33x9.50x16,, most 35's will be pretty tight without a lift,,, works on some,,, depends on your springs,,,

Thanks pickupmanx2 for the tire info. It has a 400 in it. and yes I will be keeping the stock wheels for now heck it has the original hubcaps on it (I think) and no lift in the near future (moneys tight).
goood choice on trucks. i ran 33's (4.10's) on my highboy for a few years...bout 9mpg's on the highway. went up to 36's now i get bout 11mpg's with a good running fe390

ps. my 2 pstrokes are geared:
00 3.73's on 315-75-16 i get bout 14-20+ depending how i drive it
99 4.10's on 255-85-16 i get a best of bout 17mpgs
Thanks for all the help guys. After looking through all the recipients it turns out the 79,000 miles on it are all original and the tires on it are the second set withe the original spare still hanging under it. I figured I should put a pic up of the new ride.
