16" tires

Thinking about going to a 16" tire on my 84 F150 2 WD, since I already have the rims from another truck. What size is anyone running? Looking for something similar in diameter to the 235/75/R15's I have now. Nothing outrageous in size.

Are you sure the rims will fit? I would try them first. 16 inch rims of this era were for f250 and 350 trucks. 16 inch on a regular f150 must be from a later truck. Make sure they are not metric and make sure they do not rub the brake caliper up front.

If they do fit your truck, what you are doing is called "plus sizing", going to a larger rim but keeping the same tire size. To go from a 235/75 15 to a 16 it would be something like 235/65/16. Same tread width, shorter sidewall to compensate for the larger rim.

They'll fit, I checked. I was thinking the 235/65 would be close.

Not that they make them, but 235/69.6-16 would be the same size as 235/75-15. So if you found 235/75-16 it would be 1" taller, 235/70-16 would be ~0.1" taller, 235/65-16 would be ~0.8" shorter.

The diameter is also affected by the "width" number on the tire size, so going wider while keeping the same aspect ratio will mean the tire is taller as well. So for instance an imaginary 251/65-16 or 218/75-16 would be the same diameter as a 235/75-15 but wider or narrower, respectively.

I'm running 295/75R16 on 16x8 wheels. Nice small tires and seem just right for a stock height truck. May be a bit wide for a stock wheel which I believe is 7" wide.

I see someone said this is for your F-150. When I had a F-150 I ran 33"x12.5" which again was just right for a stock height truck. Slight rub on the radius arms at full lock but not a big deal, didn't appreciable affect turning radius. For reference teh 295/75R16 on my F-350 comes out to 33.4"x11.6", very close to what I had on the F-150 back in the day.

Looking at the A/TW on the Cooper web site (just to pick a light truck tire), the closest 16" tire to a 235/75-15 is 225/75-16. That's 0.4" taller and 0.4" narrower than your stock tire.

Other tires might be available in other sizes, but that's at least a real tire size that's close.

People run 33's in f150's, but like was mentioned they do rub and I personally think the tire looks "stuffed" into the wheel well. It's your preference though of how you want your truck to perform and look. If you have pretty low numbered gears in the rearend, the 33's are going to kill any acceleration you have also.

I'd imagine if you went with a 33"x10.5" it would not rub, or had a little less backspacing on the wheel and kept the wider tire... Though depending how much less that may be asking a lot of a 44TTB. I would not want to give up traction by going to a skinny tire, and there certainly wasn't any rubbing on the fenders or bed sides. Turning radius loss was negligible even on very tight trails. If rubbing bothered you enough you could adjust the steering stops.

My SWB F-150 accelerated very quickly with 33"x12.5" tires. Wee little 302 with a mild cam, 600 CFM 4160 Holley, and headers. NP435 and 3.55:1 gears. Very low output engine and I thought it was reasonably quick. Maybe in a crew cab long bed with a 300 or 302 with taller than 3.55:1 gears, but not a more typical truck.

235/85r16 is factory height in a F250/350

will get you a little bit more size than the OEM 15" it came with. bonus also is that size is so prevalent they are actually quite cheap for good rubber.

I went with Wal-Mart's house brand Douglas which is made by Goodyear on my 86 F150 2WD. The stock tire size was 215-75r15

Great tire so far!
