I'm about to preform my gear swap for my 8.8 axle. I'm going from 3.55 to 4.10s, and have all the parts I need. I am getting close to crunch time as I'm going back to school and I need to get this task done. I'm shooting for doing it over monday and tuesday (basically tomorrow because it's saturday night now). Only problem is, I don't have an inch-lb torque wrench. I know people who have a clicker type but I can't really read pinion pre-load with a clicker type because I need to measure sweeping torque. It seems almost impossible to get one unless I order one, and I'll never get it by monday if I order it now. So, is there any other way to get the proper pinion pre-load? I'm desperate for alternatives.
You can come pretty close with a clicker wrench but it takes a little work. The manual calls for 16-29 inch-lbs. Set the wrench at 16. Gradually crush the sleeve till the wrench clicks at 16. Repeat the reading several times to make sure that it won't hold 16. Reset the wrench to 29. Turn the pinion and again repeat several times, if it doesn't click you're done. If it clicks, get a new crush sleeve and start over
