You can use a 57-72 Ford 1/2 Ton 9" reared to replace the stock Dana rear ended or you could keep the original rear end and since it's got a 302 you can add a automatic or manual trans with over drive to keep the RPMs low.
2X merton with the dual master cylinder bowls. You can buy kits for changing to a dual (power or not) Master Cylinder and front disk breaks from vendors like MidFifty, CPP, POL, Speedway and Jets. There's many more venders too.
Got those classic AR Vector wheels, have those on a 56 F100...old skool.
Even if you keep the stock front axle/suspension, you will never regret an upgrade to disc brakes. Drum brakes fade with heat, not sure what kind of driving you will be doing but any start and stop driving in traffic will take it's toll on drums and your nerves. As stated already, upgrade the M/C. 9 inch rearends have been the standard but an 8.8 rearend out of a 96 or later Explorer XLT is a better rearend...3.73 gears, TracLoc, 31 spline axles, and disc brakes. Around here they can be bought for around $125 and there are a lot more of them in wrecking yards than 9 inch.
I'd go with the explorer rear end and swap the front suspension for the crown Vic ifs, that'll give you ifs with power rack and disc brakes and the rear end lug pattern would match the new front.
+3 on the dual master cylinder for safety's sake, regardless if you keep the manual binders or upgrade to a power brake unit. You also have the option of frame or firewall mounted master cylinder/boosters if you go in the direction.
The stock drums work fine if you remember that they're stock drums, but if your rig is going to be a driver, I'd seriously consider the disc upgrade.
The 57-72 F-100 9" will keep your 5 lug 5.5 inch pattern. But if your going with new front disks you can probably get them with either lug pattern. Just need new wheel!!!!s
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It's been a while since checking in here. Still not ready to drive regularly, as the engine isn't pulling power. It appears there is a stuck valve or it's not opening all of the way, so that's the next project.
Thanks everyone- Will go with upgraded power / dual m.c. and if I can find some higher gears up to '72 I will. I wouldn't mind changing to an explorer rear end, but not ready to spend some more money on new wheels.
Yep, it was made over in the 70s so that's the style they used. I will need to replace my cab, so the color scheme will be going.
Get CPP firewall mount power booster kit with pedal set-up and correct proportion valve body set-up disc front--drum rear-- or get the frame mount set-up and use original brake pedel--get Speedway front disc brake kit -- find a rear mechanic to change the Dans 44 rear gears to 3:23 or 27 if they can find a carrier. Then you are ready to cruise and stop-- are your leaf springs and bushings good-- take every other leaf out the front ones ---- give it a good stance---you will get a good ride and handling ---
