I am starting to plan out brake line, fuel line, wire loom routing. What is the best way to connect the hangers to the frame...self tapping screws, nut and bolt. I am using rubber coated mounts for fuel lines, is it the same for brake and wire looms?
Hi Tom... self tapping are the easiest... I'd use stainless... but you have to watch out for those sharp edges sticking... unless you grind them off... I've used both but drilling then bolting on with #20s is time consuming...
I would use frame clips for the brake and fuel tubing using split vinyl tubing insulators, and the same for the loom, if it isn't too big. Self tappers are ok on the outside of the frame, but look really dumb from the outside when used on the inside (grind them flush if you do). Personally, I prefer machine screws w/washers and Nyloks over self tappers any day of the week.
Self tappers are probably the worst solution for your use IMHO. They look amateur, are prone to fail, and rarely hold torque. I'd go with stainless bolts, nuts and washers personally, but to each their own. Army aviation? Have you seen many self tappers holding any critical lines on anything that flies in your experience?
For hard line I used adel clamps with stainless hardware. For the wire loom I used frame clips to hold the wire in place. I picked them up at a local trailer supply.
I'm using SS clips bolted through the frame with bolts and nylok nuts. There are holes in the frame already where OEM clips were mounted. I only had to add a few.
