I have a 99 250SD with the V-10 and the 4-100 transmisson.(I think thats the model, anyway it's an automatic)....With the cruise on and running at 75mph on the interstate and in overdrive pulling nothing, it wants to kick out of overdrive going up a long steep hill. There is ABSOLUTLY NO indication of needing to do so...tach stays right at 2000rpms and speed maintains right at 75. If the hill is long enought, it will come back into overdrive but most likely will kick out again before you get to the top. What would you fellas think might be wrong????? The overdrive light on the gear shift handle does not flicker at any time indicating a problem. This truck has 3:73 gears.
Took my PSD with 3:73 gears and the same model transmisson up the same set of hills today and it never did shift down. I know that there is more torq with the Diesel, but I would sure think a V-10 ought to go up them hills with out shifting out. Help please..thanks
If your rpms do not increase then the truck isn't downshifting. It might be that the torque convertor is locking/unlocking as it is electronically controlled by the computer.
Tim...I reread my post and when it does the down shift, the tach goes to 3000rpms and it stays at 75mph...it's doing the same thing as if I were to punch the overdrive button. Is this any help to you?????? Thanks..trakman
Okay I believe it is downshifting now too. I can't help with why or how to fix it though. Sorry. The computer has parameters etc. that tell it when to shift and lock up TC similar as it can change spark or fuel. It could be that the hill is steep enough or that 75 mph is fast mode or 3.73 gears may downshift more than the 4.30. The truck should "learn" according to your driving patterns but not always does everything work as expected during development. I don't mean to ramble but just trying to give ideas to think about. You have to determine the problem before the solution. There are some readers here that I'm sure are willing and able to help. Not all read every thread so make make sure that you catch their eye with the title and be specific enough to get a reply. Good luck.
Thanks Tim for your reply...I'll hopefully wait for someone that might have a solution to this problem. It's kinda embarassing to be going up them hills with the power of a V-10 and have it shift down and your passsenger asks "What did it do that for?"

I think that explains the difference right there. Maybe a V10 with the 4.30 gears wouldn't downshift, but I don't think it's unusual for the V10 to have to downshift with the 3.73. You are absolutely right, the PSD does have more low end torque and won't and shouldn't need to downshift in that situation. I think the combination of the V10 and the 3.73 gears is the issue. It may also be that you are driving 75. Try the same scenario driving about 65 and see if it happens.
Thanks guys for all the info.....I'll try the 65mph the next time I'm down that way where the hills are. In maybe a related problem to this transmisson, It has what I would call a "soft shift" to it when you are going through the gears....I've read here that this transmisson get used to my driving chararistics and thats programed into the computer. The truck has 58,000 miles on it and I have put the last 30,000 on it with my driving habits. Did I read here that by unhooking the battery and leaving it unhooked for a while that would erase the memory in the computer thus changing the shift chararistics in the transmisson???? Thanks and I'll wait to hear from all of you.
I'm in no way an educated person on this topic. But, it sounds to me like you are getting caught between shift points. If you set the criuse a little lower, it may not shift back and forth. Also, once it shifts the first time, pust the overdrive button till you get to the top. This will keep the tranny from shifting into overdrive. The only cure I know of, would be a chip to reset the shift points. I may be way off here, maybe someone else has better knowledge than I do.
My 01 has always been a bug when in cruise on anything other than a flat freeway. It will slam out of over drive at the slightest hint of an incline. On a decline of any sort it will gently back off the gas every few seconds so as to almost make you seasick.
If you drive without the cruise on, it does not do any of this. With your foot on the gas, it is easy to have a smooth steady ride and it only down shifts when necessary, and then not as hard.
