yeah either your solenoid is bad or it's wired incorrectly. I'd double check all the wiring on it, sometimes they stick & need to be tapped on a little bit

If you have a test light or DVOM you should be able to tell......Disconnect the big starter cable at the starter, make sure it is not grounded out..........make sure your key is "Off"......now connect your battery......is there power at the "S" terminal wire???? If so....its in the circuit coming from the ignition switch or the switch itself.....If not, check for power on both of the large terminals on the solenoid.......if they are both hot.....you have a cooked solenoid.

If you remove the wire(s) from the S terminal, and the starter continues to spin, then the solenoid is stuck closed. Sometimes hitting it with a the handle of a hammer will clear it. Or it could be totally pooched

i have the solenoid a few taps, and i am now able to hook up the battery. so it has to be in the ignition switch or that portion of the harness

When the solenoid sticks like that, it's likely one of two things:
1) A bad ground connection to the fender well (possible)
2) A bad solenoid (more likely)

Solenoids from Autozone and O'Reilly are horrible. I've gotten more bad ones than good ones from those stores

i've go at a good ground to the fender well, and it's a brand new blue streak solenoid. i have it a few taps and it doesn't seem to be stuck anymore. i have the battery hooked up. i also tried by passing the ignition like you told me yesterday once more to make sure the solenoid wasn't pooched. and when i do that i still cranks. so it looks like i should be looking back down the line twords the ignition switch.

Ok, sounds like we've verified as good:
  • The battery
  • The battery to solenoid cable
  • The solenoid
  • The solenoid ground
  • The solenoid to starter cable
  • The starter
  • The block to battery ground cable

Good work!

Ok, next thing to check is: does the wire that activates the solenoid, at the S terminal, go hot when you turn the key?

It probably doesn't. So check it back at the ignition switch

But first, check that you're getting power to the ignition switch

just a thought here, let me know if you think this would cause my problem.
i dont have my NNS (neutral start switch) plugged in because my 79 harness doesnt plug into my 74 transmission.

Would that switch not being plugged in not allow the ignition switch to engage and start?
if so someone on here mentioned i can bypass the neutral start function so you can start it by jumping the two wires in the plug.

what do you guys think?

yes that switch need to be plugged in, the start wire runs through it. the switch doesn't need to be on the trans but does need plugged in

this is what the other guy said. mikeo0o0o0
"If push comes to shove, you can bypass the neutral start function so you can start it by jumping the two wires in the plug"

heres a picture of where my plug is located on the harness. if that helps.

your saying if i cut the matching plug off of the trans that went with this harness. and plugged it into my empty plug. that will work, even though it goes no where?
