78/79 max wheel backspace without spacers

Is anybody running more than 3.75" of backspace without spacers? I want to go from a 15" to a 20" wheel with 4.75" bs. I'm hoping the extra diameter will let me clear the steering knuckle / tie rod end. Thanks to all responders!

I had some used rims/tires on my Bronco in order to see how 35's would fit without a lift. I didn't know the backspacing until a couple days ago when I had the tires taken off the rims. I measured, not 100% accurately by just eyeballing with a tape measure, and they are 4.5" backspacing. That's from the mounting surface to the lip of the rim. I had no issues with the rims touching anything, granted they're 17's and not 15's or 20's like you're dealing with.

your bronco must be a pavement pounder then? if your running a 37" or bigger tire 20" wheels look good. otherwise stick to the 15's maybe do a 17" rim. I thnk 4.5 is about max for backspacing before you hit the radius arms, that is going to happen way before the tierod or any other area hits.

I think 17's looked pretty good on mine with 35's. I would do less backspacing than the 4.5" that mine have though, to avoid hitting the radius arms with the tires. If you have smaller, stock sized tires, then 4.5 probably wouldn't hurt. I plan on putting the 17's I had on my Bronco onto my F100 with a more stock sized tire and putting 15's on the Bronco with a better backspacing and going with 35" tires again. 20's are definitely for airing down and crawling at the mall.
