Casting a broad net

I've been out of the game for a while but I've been asked to help a co worker source a truck.

He wants a 2016/17 Lariat and his CU has offered him a letter stating that he can borrow up to $41K. I'm thinking that if he waits till Independence day time frame, he'll get better factory incentives that he can pile on to the dealer discounts.

He has no valuable trade and not much to put down.

So, to better assist him, I'll show him everything on the lot but I'll gently nudge him towards an XLT, no nav, no ecoboost and no leather and start there.

Thoughts please, he's a good guy.

That CU voucher is the same as cash to the dealer. Find the truck he wants in the 41-48k range. Make an offer of $40,000 or less out the door. Look in the neighborhood of 8-10,000 off of MSRP. For $41,000 cash he should be able to get a nice truck. Especially a left over 2016. The biggest problem he will have is the finance guy will try to beat him down and want him to go through FMC.

If he has a very good credit rating Ford is offering 0% for 72 months on 2016s and 0.9 on 2017's. On the 17's it looks like he might lose the incentives if he goes with the low interest offer.
41K should put him below a Lariat and above a XLT Sport. Normally the V8 is cheaper but it depends on the truck. My 2016 had a discount for the 2.7L EcoBoost which made it less than a comparable V8 model I was looking at. I was able to get a 2016 2.7 EcoBoost F150 SuperCrew 501a (no nav) with a factory spray in liner & Ford hard rollup cover for slightly more than his number, I think is was around $43K.
There are 2016 Lariat Crew Cabs with the 502a for less than 45. That gives him a Lariat with Navigation but he gives up the big back seat. I would shop 2016's now just to see. Who knows he may end up with a good deal on a 2017 if the dealer doesn’t want him walking.

I believe he could do it now, with very little effort. I went to the Ford site and searched for 145" Super Crew Lariat and came back with a few that would probably fit the budget. A base Lariat is $42425 msrp plus destination. You didn't specify cab, but I suspect that an extended cab Lariat would be less? Will incentives increase over the current offerings? I'm sure. Down here, right now, Ford only has about $300 available? Boils down to how long he wants to wait......

Here. Found his truck. Your friend live in SE Virginia too? Wynne Ford. Are they known to make a deal? According to the window sticker this truck was built in Feb 2016. I suspect this Lariat could be had about as well as one could be had. 5.0 with a 3.55 limited slip. I had that combo in a 2012 and it did well. New 2016 Ford F-150 For Sale | Hampton VA

Now's a great time because all of the leftover 2016 models. If he doesn't want the 2nd gen EcoBoost, he could probably save a few thousand by getting a leftover model. Those won't be around come the summertime.

He shouldn't have a problem getting a 2wd for that. Or he could save a ton by getting a left over 2016 XLT Sport (if the dealer can find one) then having leather added. The savings would allow for 4x4 if he wanted.

Just go to cars.com and search for a new Ford F-150 truck. I see a lot of $8k off MSRP's there. If there's no trade-in, he won't qualify for the $1k off though....

Hey thanks guys, he's my co worker so I see him daily. Very good insight here as usual from the experts that I've come to respect and appreciate.

That looks like an excellent price. He might get a little more and a good interest rate though Ford Credit.
